The Children of Húrin
Anyone get it? It came out yesterday. It's pretty good so far it was, for the most part, written by J.R.R. Tolkien and later edited by his son Christopher Tolkien.

The Children of Húrin takes the reader back to a time long before The Lord of the Rings, in an area of Middle-earth that was to be drowned before Hobbits appeared, and when the great enemy was still the fallen Vala, Morgoth, and Sauron was only Morgoth's lieutenant. This heroic romance is the tale of the Man, Húrin, who dared to defy Morgoth's force of evil, and his family's tragic destiny, as it follows his son Túrin Turambar's travels through the lost world of Beleriand...

Re: The Children of Húrin
I can't see myself reading it, unless I find a free copy.
Not after seeing what Herbert's son has done with his post-humous works.

Re: The Children of Húrin
If you like Tolkien's other works then you wil like this one. The story so far is coming along well. IF you can get around some of the usual Tolkien history i.e; X the son of Y the son of Z, did A in the battle of B. The intro by C. Tolkien has a lot of this. I understood most of it.

Re: The Children of Húrin
I've never been a fan of the extremes to which the Lord of the Rings universe has grown. I've never taken it further than the hobbit, the trilogy, and the silmarillion. I didn't much care for the silmarillion, it's good that the depths exist for the story.
I've simply never seen a reason for them to be published. I assume it's a question of supply and demand, with shades of capitalism. The only real comparison I have for it is the expansive Star Wars literature available; although, some of it is well written and enjoyable.
That being said, I do quite enjoy the hobbit and the lord of the rings trilogy.

Re: The Children of Húrin
Oh yes, definitely, LOTR trilogy and The Hobbit are my favorites also. I agree with you on the silmarillion. I do find the history really interesting, though. It's really interesting, and well put together. There's just so much to it. If you pick up one of the "Middle Earth Encyclopedia" books and just flip to a random page there's a 70% percent chance you'll learn somthing new. And yes there are plenty of good books in the Star Wars EU. I'd recommend reading the episode III novelization and the book that follows that, "Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader." Those to would be really good for people who haven't really gotten into reading any of the SW:EU.

Re: The Children of Húrin
My housemate purchased it as soon as it came out and now I'm waiting very impatiently for her to finish.
Stop writing your essay and read faster girl. Dammit!

I have high hopes for this. I enjoyed what we were given of the story in the Silmarillion and I love the idea of it being expanded on. Also, C Tolkien has done a fine job organising and editing his father's unfinished works so far.

Re: The Children of Húrin
Christopher Tolkien can be trusted to complete and publish his father's works.

True it can seem tedious but to limit yourself to the 'core' storyline means you miss out on characters such as Tom Bombadil and Farmer Giles of Ham. I'd have to say 'Tales From The Perilous Realm' is equally as enjoyable as The Hobbit and The Silmarillion, more so than the latter if you don't want a ton of history.

They're both included in the LotR trilogy.

Re: The Children of Húrin
This is basically just the chapter from the Silmarillion about Turin expanded into a book, but since that was just about my favorite chapter, I'm sure as fuck getting my hands on this.
