| Technophiliacs & Technophiles The Technophiliacs forum is for discussing any and all forms of tech and other types of social backwardness. Including discussions of strange home-brewed hardware technology. Where to get good tools. How to make fiberglass molds. Computer hardware and software technolgy, including operating systems, applications, networking, hardware, CPU's, disk drives, and other geeky things. Viruses and Artificial Life discussions. How to write HTML. End user tools discussions and support issues. Gating the Internet with other nets. If your computer is better than anyone else's computer, you are required to post a message explaining why. You'll probably be wrong, especially if you're a Mac or BeOS user, but post anyway. |

So...AMD vs Pentium duel core for gaming
So I am building a new PC for myself for which its primary purpose will be gaming and i need to decide on a CPU.
I know duel core processors are better but i don't know whether to get an AMD duel core or a Pentium one.
Plz help me decide.
Oh and if this question has been covered a million times already or something, just flame me and i will delete it.

honestly they are pretty similar to each other, i have seen the intel's be a lil bit more buggy than the amd dual cores though. personally, im going with amd 64 bit 2.0 ghz dual core

Core 2 Duo is the best you're going to get right now. Personally, I have an AMD 64X2 4200+ and it runs everything great, but the Core 2 Duos are faster.

Unless i am mistaken, the AMD cpu's are cheaper also. Looks like an Athlon64 X2 5200+.

AMD. The architecture of amd is slightly more advanced than intel, or atleast it was in the begining.
I can't remember where i read it, i will try dig it up.

not worth getting the 5200 stick with the 4400's/4200's and then over clock them or even the 3800's if you are lucky enough to find one

I have a 3800. How over clockable are they?
Any certain stepping needed?

http://www.overclock.net/ would be the best place to look for the answer to that (wish I knew, but I haven't had the chance to play with an AMD since I had some dirt-old 400mhz system).

Between Pentium D and AMD's Athlon X2 (that's the dual-core one, right?) I'd go with the AMD. They're going to be faster compared to the Pentium. Now though, if you want to pony up a TINY bit more cash, you could go with the Intel Core 2 Duo and have an even MORE powerful system.
My two cents, directly from the bank of FACTS.

Re: So...AMD vs Pentium duel core for gaming
the amd architechure is much better than intels. you may be like "well intell popped out the core 2 duo first"
this is true, but the core 2 duo had more problems.
Amd actually tests their stuff a bit more than intel does, so yes intel pops out their processors faster but they generally have more bugs. faster they are, but buggier as well. amd's on the other hand are a tad slower, but not enough to notice any real difference..im sticking with amd because they are worlds more reliable than intel ever thought about being..so intel can roll out as many cores as they want, they are built unreliably and then over priced!

Re: So...AMD vs Pentium duel core for gaming
AMD FTW.
Hell, I'm still running on a Athlon 64 3200+ (754) and it does fine.
Recommended: don't buy new (as in new release). Buy 'old' (between three and six months since release) stock on a clearance sale.
Even better, wait until the end of the financial year. Great price drops to be had, especially as AMD recently cut its whoesale prices drastically.
Say again: AMD FTW.
