There seems to b some confusion about what the "reputation" system is for. (The little rectangle or rectangles next to the "location" in the upper right hand corner of each message.)
Very simply, a person's "reputation" is supposed to be a rough measurement of how much they contribute -- positively or negatively -- to the message boards.
If you like what someone posts or if they've been helpful, add to their reputation. If they're unhelpful or abusive, give them a negative rep.
However, individual votes are not the only way that your reputation can be raised or lowered. The system itself is programmed to recognize and raise (or lower) reputations based on other factors. I'm still working the kinks out of this system, so don't be surprised to see your reputation go up or down unexpectedly over the next few weeks.
A word of advice: Adding to someone's reputation for no reason other than:
- They asked you to
- You're rep-boosting each other
... this can have a negative impact on your reputation. Since rep-boosting has a negative impact on the message boards, it's going to impact your rep negatively.
