Technophiliacs & Technophiles The Technophiliacs forum is for discussing any and all forms of tech and other types of social backwardness. Including discussions of strange home-brewed hardware technology. Where to get good tools. How to make fiberglass molds. Computer hardware and software technolgy, including operating systems, applications, networking, hardware, CPU's, disk drives, and other geeky things. Viruses and Artificial Life discussions. How to write HTML. End user tools discussions and support issues. Gating the Internet with other nets. If your computer is better than anyone else's computer, you are required to post a message explaining why. You'll probably be wrong, especially if you're a Mac or BeOS user, but post anyway.

Default Windows Vista

Who has it, what do you think about it?

Personally, I think it sucks ass. I had no choice but to get it for my new laptop from Dell. Well I have it, and my wireless connection is half the speed for no apparent reason except my old laptop has windows xp and the new one has vista.

Alsok it takes up a shitload of harddrive...somewhere around 20+ GB

ive had it freeze 3 times on me now in 10 days that I've had it.

They fucked up Sound Recorder so I can't use that to record quick musical ideas that hit me.

And in general, it's just pointless as hell. Nothing is more efficient, all that's great about it is it has some transparency around window borders. FUCK THAT.

My computer runs like shit because of Vista and I hate it.

I can uninstall Vista and insteal Windows XP in its place without much of a hassle, right?

Maybe I am missing the big picture though, and if anyone else here has Vista please share your thoughts and experiences.

I think if you run it on these so called "rista ready" machines that theyre plastering all over you arent going to like it, especially these £350 laptops which have ass specs yet seem to be vista ready.

I put it on an external HDD and ran it on my macbook pro through bootcamp and i have to say that i wasnt as shocked by the assness as some others claim.

It did seem to be a little bit like XP in macOSX clothes but it was an okay experiance, although i wouldnt use it all the time unless i had to move to it.

I use it on my desktop computer, and have been running it for approximately 2 months and have not had any issues yet.

No driver problems, no freezes/crashes.

everything has worked seamlessly for me, after an 'upgrade' from xp pro.

My computer is rated a 4 btw, for comparison.

It runs just as fast as XP did, if not faster.

Browsing folders/finding documents/files is so efficient and fast, integrated search works damn well.

easy to configure to suit me, easy to configure network + display, sound, everything.

All in all? solid vista experience, and no way will i be going back to XP.

and no lol, i'm not a salesrep

It's from the built in windows vista ratings...

the rating system is in built into Vista and rates it on:
Processor, memory, graphics, gaming graphics and primary hard disk capabilities...

at one stage there was a program that would rate your computer according to the same scale but i can't seem to find it anymore.

basically, mine is a Athlon xp 3800+, 2 gig DDR 400, x700 256meg pci-X graphics, 40+ 250 gig hard drives which gave me the rating of four.

Essentially it is to give you an indication and recommendation of what software would and would not work, and to compare the performance of your system against another running vista, 3 is the minimum for Aero if i remember correctly.

Another important thing with the ratings, btw, is that microsoft will keep adding new ratings (numbers, not criteria), so my computer will ALWAYS remain a 4, while newer and more powerful rigs will be rated higher, and the next generation higher so, so you know where yours stands in the food chain.

It's XP with a face lift, not worth the price tag IMO. Considering there's so many good open source OS's.

I got a new laptop with vista on it and from the moment i turned it on it has been the slowest piece of shit ever made. For starters it only has 500mb of RAM when Vista needs 1gb, i questioned the guy at the store about it being sold with only 500Mb and he told me some bullshit about it being enough RAM for it to run fast enough, when i got it i installed a virus scanner and that completely fucked it up, even though it stated "Vista Ready", i had to un install it..

Yeah i have seen a lot of these kinds of budget laptops being advertised as "vista ready" in places in the UK like PC world and so on.

I doubt if even those with 1GB could run Vista as it is meant to be run.
