| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

Communism is the next logical step
Yep, you see at the moment when there are big technological advances, lets take tractors for instance, huge numbers of workers are left unemployed while the business owners make huge profits. Obviously, this does not work in society as it encourages crime, etc. However, under a communist government, everyone would benefit with technological advances rather than just the business owners.
In my opinion, most people oppose communism because they don't understand it, they have been brain-washed by the right-wing media, etc.
Another example, is Star Trek where due to great advances in technology humans can pretty much choose their occupation as machines do the rest.. this is what the world could be like under a communist government.
Let the flame-wars begin!

Re: Communism is the next logical step
There was still wars and enormous societal problems in the world of Star Trek, despite the absence of greed and money.

You forget the downsides to communism! Which is why communism ussualy fails! Its has nothing to offer and its easy to corrupt! Plus even in communism someones going to have to be rich! The government would be rich and the others poor!
Also why should a man who never goes to work and stays at home to party and be a bum make as much money as the guy who brakes his back at work??? Its not fair and stupid! Man should eat by the sweat of his brow(quote from the bible)!!!
Get off here kidiot!

Re: Communism is the next logical step
I always thought the next best step would be to start a Social-Capitalist system. Under this system society would both advance yet support those that need it.
So this is how it would go.
[Tier 1]
Classes: Upper and Middle
Economy: Capitolist
The upper and middle support the second Tier and growth still continues.
[Tier 2]
Classes: Lower
Economy: Communist
The lower recieves support from the Upper and Middle classes but just recieves enough to survive but still has a chance to advance to Tier 1.

I'm not a trekkie but....
Those were wars between the Federation and other entities, right? The Federation core worlds are most likely Marxist or technocratic
EDIT: and the USSR is not originally Marx's ideas, people. First it was Leninist then ended up becoming Stalinist.
Not to mention the 'workers' self-management' councils, etc. Thst's why all those people fought for a Soviet-style system in the US (As in a WOrkers' Soviet). The Haymarket Massacre, the 1877 Strikes, etc.

Re: Communism is the next logical step
Communism would work.
Too bad it's never been achieved.
See communism calls for a socialist dictatorship to protect the state in the period between revolution and communism/deindustrialization.
Unfortunately, history has proven that any time you create avenues for that kind of absolute power, there will be someone around to abuse it.
It's like the prohibition, or cake donuts: looks good on paper, never works out.
Communist governments killed 100 million people and all I got was this lousy Che T-shirt.

Re: Communism is the next logical step
Say I own a t-shirt shop. My employees must fulfill a quota of making ten shirts a day. Each t-shirt costs $5. The price of labor is $3.50. The raw material and machinery costs are equal to about $5 a day. Now one employee usually finishes his quota in 2 hours, which means that I have $50 in product and $13 in expenses. Without doing any work, I the capitalist, have made $37 in profit, $10 of which will go to covering my future expenses, whereas, my employee who did all the work gets paid only $7.
Above is an example of Capitalism. Communism seeks to rid the world of events like this. Below is an example of Communism
Say I WORK at a t-shirt shop. I must fulfill a quota of making ten shirts a day. Each t-shirt costs $5. The raw material and machinery costs are equal to about $5 a day. Now I usually finish my quota in 2 hours, which means I have $50 dollars in product and $5 in expenses. By doing all the work I make $40 with $10 left for future expenses.

Economics was rarely discussed in the shows or movies, in regards to Earth or the Federation.
It was more the fact that money had lost all purpose because technology could provide all goods and services for free.
