Technophiliacs & Technophiles The Technophiliacs forum is for discussing any and all forms of tech and other types of social backwardness. Including discussions of strange home-brewed hardware technology. Where to get good tools. How to make fiberglass molds. Computer hardware and software technolgy, including operating systems, applications, networking, hardware, CPU's, disk drives, and other geeky things. Viruses and Artificial Life discussions. How to write HTML. End user tools discussions and support issues. Gating the Internet with other nets. If your computer is better than anyone else's computer, you are required to post a message explaining why. You'll probably be wrong, especially if you're a Mac or BeOS user, but post anyway.

Thumbs up Reputable & fast budget hosting?

I'm looking to buy myself some more hosting space. I've stuck with www.nearlyfreespeech.net until now, but it does not lend itself to sites containing large files.

Could someone suggest to me a reputable & fast budget hosting provider? It's hard to tell whether these so called "Best Paid Hosting Reviews" sites are telling the truth, or are simply looking for a quick buck in referrals...

Thanks.

To me, that site looks like their bottom line is in advertising/referrals anyway and not customer satisfaction...

http://www.Smartyhost.com.au, now in the Optus DataCenter...

$8/month, 10gig bandwidth, 100mb space, 24/7 support, CGI/MySQL/PHP and unlimited emails...

I currently have 6 sites hosted on their servers and never had a problem...

I made the mistake of getting a godaddy account.

I start to setup the web page, ... fuck no shell access.

Already paid two years in advance.

Not budget, and I think I've mentioned them before but I like http://dreamhost.com. They give SA goons *really* good discounts with coupon codes, might be worth spending $10 to get an SA account just to save money on hosting!

They seem to offer rather large amounts of storage and bandwidth, if you need to host higher traffic sites it might be worthwhile.

I recommend Servage.net.

Here's what you get:
- 310 GB of space
- 3 TB of monthly bandwidth
- Unlimited email accounts (both pop3 and imap), ftp accounts, and subdomains
- Full DNS management, .htaccess & .htpasswd support
- You can post pron/offensive material as long as it doesn't violate the law (like child pron)

All for $6.45 a month.

Plus, just for you guys, if you enter in "totse" as a coupon code, you get an extra 25 GB of space.

I'm uploading a file right now that's about 250 megs (it's an episode of Bullshit). When it get's done I'll post a link so you can see how fast it downloads for you.

edit: K, here's the link to the file: Right click and 'save as'. It's the Bullshit episode from season 4 on abstinence. You can download it all if you want to watch the episode (but only if you have a subscription to Showtime ), or you can just let it download for a minute or so to see how the speed is. If it's slow, please say so, but I've always got good speeds from them.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll do some more Googling now that I have some good starting points.

Um, I don't think they have shell access (don't really know). How would I find out if they do? Also, what do you need/use shell access for?

PROTIP: You can just go to the "Ads list" on SomethingAwful and click one of the Dreamhost ads and it'll give you the discount.

Ah, but that's dishonest now isn't it

They are excellent value for money though.
