Thumbs down How I lost a good friend (long)

I lost a really good friend of mine just recently. BTW, I'm a guy and she's a girl. Long story short, I met this girl at my work and we became friends. I thought she was pretty attractive, but didn't really want to date her or anything. We had a lot in common, so we started hanging out outside of work. Very innocent stuff, just going out to lunch and the occasional movie every once in a while. She had a boyfriend, but again, it's not like I liked her like that.

I probably should have never hung out with her knowing she had a boyfriend, because I wouldn't like my girlfriend hanging out with "guy friends" without me. Problem is, the more we hung out, the more I started to like her as more than just a friend. She broke up with her boyfriend for whatever reason, and we continued hanging out with each other. She liked me a little, and we joked around with the idea of us dating. Then one day I just asked her out. She said that she wouldn't mind dating me, but it was too soon to be dating again.

We were still friends and hung out with each other. She would come over to my place to hang out and watch movies, and we would hang out at the beach. I even got a kiss from her one day, but I got nervous and fucked it up (that usually doesn't happen). One day I told her that I really liked her and that I thought we should date, and that's when it started to get a little wierd. I guess I was trapped in the "friend zone" as some people like to say.

So we had a discussion about it and came to the conclusion that it wouldn't really work out(she is older than me, but that's not the only reason), and that we shouldn't hang out anymore. She is constantly putting herself down, and she didn't believe me when I told her that I wanted to be with her and what a wonderful person she was. It didn't help that I'm a little shy, too

Anyway, I'm really upset about the whole situation. I really enjoyed the time I spent with her, and I'm angry at myself for losing such a good friend. I just wish things could go back to the way they were.

And if she's reading this: I'm really sorry, I really want us to continue being friends

Totseans, if you can learn anything from this it's either:

-Don't become friends with someone you might want to date later
or
-Don't try and date friends

that's really sad man. I can't really say anything since I have never gone through something like that. But yeah, it wouldn't work out...you know the lets-forget-the-past-and-be-friends-again thing, because in the back of your mind you'll be still thinking you love her or something in that line.

I guess...the only thing to do is to try to forget about it. life isn't fair and sometimes you risk something but you get something else. look for that thing that you got out of that situation, experiences which help you be a better person so that in the future you don't mess things up, or make mistakes. take this as a good experience.

Been there, done that, got the mental scars. You're right; it's an extremely poor idea.

Well. That's what happens. Sometimes a platonic relationship is impossible.

Dont' date friends.

You really were emotionally attached.
I really fucking hate emotions.
I suggest giving yourselves time, maybe a month, maybe more, then contact her, out of the blue, and tell her you want to be friends again. In the mean time, meet more people and make yourself forget. It's the only way.

thanks, I'm going to try that. It's wierd. Part of me sees how it would have never worked out, but another part of me still wants to be with her. Oh well, it's not like she said we could never date. It was mostly due to the age difference.
