Basically, I popped into a restaraunt where I knew some friends of mine were, to say hello. What I didn't know was that it was a birthday party of some guy that I didn't really know all that well and his girlfriend and her friend weren't that keen on me.

So someone subtly suggested I go wait in the pub for them. That was fine with me, and so I was going to leave when a friend called for me to wait. He came over and was in a really bad mood, he wouldn't discuss it immediately and we were going off to the pub to talk it through when he bumps into not one but two spides (chavs but of the Belfast variety - see smicks, steeks, mokes, millies). Rather than apologize and walk on, he tells them to fuck off whenever they yell abuse at him.

A little further on up and I hear footsteps behind us, I know wht it is immediately - one of the spides has come for us. I turn round and put myself between my friend and the spide, knowing my friend would probably love a fight right about now and that so would the spide. Really.. I just want to get to the pub because violence wasn't going to solve anything.

Intending on apologizing for my friend or something I instead freeze on what to say, a second later the spide hits me in the face and I launch myself into a brawl with him. Before I know it, it's 5 on 2, mostly resulting in me getting my face punched repeatedly by 3 of them at the same time. I basically find anything I've ever learned just goes out the window, there's very little I can do in a situation with more of them than me.

However, eventually they go, probably fearing for the cops or something and we get onto the pub where the bouncers get us ice and get the police to take a statement and deal with whatever they can. They suggest we go to the hospital.. me only actually having a seriousy swollen eye and not being in any real pain other than a sting (open blisters on my feet actually give me more grief). I'm a little saken, so that's why I need a few pints of Magners.

We get them in and have a reasonable night at the pub despite me having told hold ice on my eye and every person talking to me in the bar. I find out what was bothering my friend as well - he was sticking up or me, thinking those guys that he was having dinner with were just being complete twats as if they were better than me. I told him not to worry, but he's now going through a period of turbulence with those friends, perhaps slightly needlessly at my expense (appreciated that he did that, but really I wasn't bothered too much by the whole thing).

Anyway.. two questions. Question 1: A girl came up to me at the bar and complimented me saying that I was good looking and the damage done actually gave me a bit of a manly edge.

Ahhh, cowards. I had a similar deal happen to me last year. I was literally just across the road from my house when 3 guys got out of their car and just started punching my head and body for a bit then took off.

My face didn't get busted up though. They snuck up behind me and knocked me on my knees then punched, so I had my arms shielding my face. Got a bit of a concussion though.

Funny you should say that, I've done for a few months each boxing, muay thai and an actual mixed martial arts (taught muay thai, boxing, bjj and wrestling skills) but I didn't do any of them long enough to remember them in the fight situation.

It was a case of everything I learned went straight out the window as adrenalin took over.

Conor, you're lucky there were only five. At the moment, though, Belfast is a lot safer than here.

The general rule is that a spide won't start a fight unless it is sure that it has enough backup so as not to take one punch. Three against one, for example, can be too risky for a lot of them.

I saw seven UYM assholes jump this guy on his way out of a pub on a saturday evening. Next thing I know, I hear an Irish accent swearing and they all run off down an alleyway. A short, hairy fella, maybe in his late 40s, runs up and helps the guy on the street onto his feet and offers him a lift.

You dont learn to use your skills until your forced to adopt them in a fighting situation that mimics real fighting, thus, sparring. Just put on mixed martial arts gloves and fight your friends two at a time. Its fun. Yes you will consistently get your ass kicked but trust me when I say, you will be surprised the first time you dont. That is...if you keep training.
