Some ass was cooking up AP in his house, there was an unintended det, he lost his right hand, his mother (who was in an adjacent room) took some flack in the legs and her back.

Said mom will fortunately not be permanently impaired.

The news report mentioned how acetone and hydrochloric acid were the main ingredients in this explosive, the recipe of which was found online.

Thats really too bad, he wasn't even old enough to understand the chemistry, or the gravity of a mistake. It's really a shame.

Can you link to the original article? Feel bad for the kid. It's one thing to get a bad burn and learn your lesson, but it's a whole new level of sadness to loose a hand or something like that forever. I wonder what he was doing to it. As sensitive and dangerous as AP is, it usually doesn't spontaneously detonate, he must have poked it or something.

I remember when I first made AP (13 yrs old, with all the warnings) I treated it as a deity, so that nothing could go wrong.

I even remember having to take a break from moving it because I was so apprehensive about transporting it from my workshop to the garden...which was all of 30m.
