That's one of the fundamentally unanswerable questions. And it really burns me that there are any unanswerable questions.

Since we have no way to step outside our universe to get an objective look we just can't see what came before time itself.

Just because we'll probably never know hasn't stopped people from hypothesizing.

Other than God, or 'it just happened', the only theory I've heard of was that our universe may have been spawned as an offshoot of another universe.

There was an article about that in the December '04 Issue of Discover. Or at least a mention of how to spawn one of our own. The article in whole is here. http://discovermagazine.com/2004/dec...the%20universe.

Would you say it came from another completely different universe? Or that it simply restarted?

We're probably a save file in a sim type game in some universe that is way more technologically advaced than us. We could just be entertainment for some adolecent kid.
