i can reassure you that unlike everyone seems to think, it's not totally fucked up and it's not a sign your gf wants to dump you. i'm in a similar situation with my boyfriend right now--we've been together for several years and we want to stay that way, but since we met in high school and are now in different colleges, we also want a chance to be able to experience other people without losing each other. so we're allowed to have sex/spend time with other people on the condition we're open about it, and it works really well for us. a lot of people don't "get it," but who cares?

as far as asking the girl, i'd say try and feel her out as far as how much she likes you and whatnot--having a nice flirtatious conversation about sex naturally steers the two of you into territory that can easily lead to a proposition and you can gauge her reactions to the various things you say. i've had several guys ask me flat-out if they could fuck me, and it really only works if i'm already semi-interested.
