Is sex a biological desire?
Are we biologically made to desire sex? Or can we just ignore it?

You're a fucking idiot. There is no meaning of life.
Life has no ultimate goal, every-ones life has different meaning. There is no structure. You interprete it how you wish.
Life's meaning isn't to procreate.
You're a slave.

Re: Is sex a biological desire?
There is no meaning or purpose to life, but successful reproduction (i.e. actually having children and making sure that they survive) is the major compulsion in life, outside staying alive yourself. Not everything in our lives is geared towards this, but most things are.

So you ask, receive an answer, and follow it up with "NO! YOU'RE SLAVES TO YOUR OWN INSTINCT!"
Way to go, Dr. Breen.

Re: Is sex a biological desire?
Any intelligent lifeforms that didn't have the desire to procreate as one of their fundamental biological desires would have been weeded out by natural selection a very long time ago. So yes, humans today are biologically 'made' to desire sex.
...surely it's obvious? That's what life does, it reproduces. If you're being pedantic about it, it's not the 'meaning' of life, but reproduction is inherent in life's nature at the most fundamental level.

OK, I flipped and I apologize.
Maybe giving objective answers would be nice next time though, rather then criticising me.

Re: Is sex a biological desire?
it seems like the general aim of life is to receive pleasure and reduce pain. one of the main ways we derive pleasure is through sexual contact.
however, with the advent of various birth control methods, sex does not have to be productive of anything except itself. so, while i would say that the furtherance of our species is probably an interest that is shared with all other species, we have found a way to separate the pleasure from the production. pleasure is a biological desire, and sex is one means to obtaining it.

Re: Is sex a biological desire?
Of course not silly.
It's obvious that natural selection would favor those individuals who never wanted to create any offspring over those who were reproducing like mad...
</sarcasm>
That was just a silly question.

Re: Is sex a biological desire?
You know, watching the way that animals- people included- act, desire for sex is definitely a biological need.
I think it would be pretty simple to defend that the meaning of life is to 1) keep living and 2) make babies.

Re: Is sex a biological desire?
it's more accurate to say that it's a biological motivation just like eating and sleeping. However, it's tertiary to those two, so it's a minor motivation, but yes, it's a desire because the species needs to continue.

How do you mean, as the species as a whole or on an individual level?

Re: Is sex a biological desire?
There is no such thing as biology! or dinosaurs! God put science on this earth to test our faith to Him!
actually, yes, sex is very fundamental to human motivation. The psychology of it is really pretty interesting. To start there is the whole idea that men can be "players" whereas sexually active women are "sluts" originated from the fact that in order for the species to survive, men should impregnate as many women per day as possible since me can just do a "wham. bam thank you ma'am" sort of thing and move on to a new mate; thus producing the most offspring possible. However women can only have children once a year (give or take) so they should stay loyal to the man that will be the best father....and a whole bunch of stuff like that.
Short answer: yes, yes it is.

Re: Is sex a biological desire?
Erm...one of our basic instincts IS to reproduce. No sex = species is not procretated=species is extinct.

Refer to: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...y_of_needs.png
Sex is one of our basic needs. Without it being a need, the species would probally die out.
