How to lose weight, and drop that fat!
Here we go then guys, I always see lots of threads here asking how to lose weight: How do I lose flab? Etc, etc. And more often then not, bad advice is given and/or the same good or bad advice is repeated. So, in light of this and as long as the current mod doesn't mind (Homerunbrad), will be posting similar threads on other subjects. Just try to post something useful in here, rather then dispute and confuse the people who need help. It's not a professional guide, it's supposed to be a simple and helpful nudge in the right direction. Keep it informative, not argumentitive!
So you want to shift those pounds then do you? You want to lose that barrel of a belly, the tree trunk thighs, and perhaps those extra chins? Or maybe you'd like to just drop last years beer gut? There's no magic pill that's for sure, but there's one simple method to lose them all:
Quote:
|
Controlled diet and exercise.
|
Sounds scary and complicated right? Sounds like hard work? Well to be somewhat truthful: it is. That need not be the end of your reading though. In this thread you'll find information and tips to shed the weight, and make sure it never returns. Should you not want it to.
So onwards we march, and to our first hurdle of weight loss:
Your diet:
I bet you like pizza and soda, fries, chips, beer, ice cream and all sorts of sugar laden, fat filled goodies. I do too! And in moderation, we can all enjoy them. Losing weight doesn't mean you have to eat carrot sticks, celery and nuts. You're not becoming a rabbit, nor an athlete. So first things first, what should you be drinking? Well, here comes the hard part for most people. You don't want to drink soda. The occasional one or two per week is fine. But not 3-5 per day and upwards. No, no, no. Soda is filled full of sugars, chemicals and crap. Certainly not good for you. You'll not only be able to lose weight by cutting it out from your diet, but also have better health and skin. Try and swap this with water and fruit juices. Try and get about 2 or so litres of water per day for a start. And then drink more (about a litre more) when you exercise that day. You need to keep hydrated, and drinking that recomended amount of water will give you more energy. It'll also help flush out some crap from your body. The fruit juice should be pure juice, or freshly squeezed. It's packed full of nutrients and vitamins. Just don't over indulge on it!
Try and avoid Coffee and tea if you can, but once again you need not never drink it. Just moderate your intake of it. Alcohol I shouldn't need to mention - avoid like the plauge. No more than two glasses of beer (or equivalent) per day. At the very most. Well if you're serious about shedding some pounds anyway, I'm sure more of you will drink a bit more than is suggested :P! So, that's a good basic foundation for what to avoid, and what not to avoid when it comes to drinking. So what about the eating? This is what puts people off, and they, and you, need not be scared about not being able to have your fav dishes. Don't eat the junk foods! We all know what these are. Just incase though, try to avoid avoid: chips, choccy, fries, fast food at all costs, pizzas, burgers, greasy fried food, cakes etc. You get the idea. Maybe have one day where you treat yourself, but just don't shovel down 3000 calories in fries etc. Don't ruin the hard work you're putting in.
What you want to eat is fruit and vegatables, making sure you get your leafy greens too. Try and make sure you get some of either of these whenever you eat. Apples, sprouts, brocolli, grapes, oranges, melon, carrotts, cucumber etc. Make sure to eat plenty of these, but don't over do it! Eating a large portion of anything is going to put on the pounds and have adverse effects! Keep it sensible, but keep it going down the hatch. Pasta, potatos and breads (Wholegrain I'm afraid) are fine. Just don't eat too much of them. You want to be having 5 portions of Fruit and Veg per day. Make sure you do. But you're not a Rabbit, so what about meat?
Yes, you can eat it! Sticking to skinless chicken breast, tuna (most fish actually) and lean meats will keep you supplied with good, complex proteins. Just don't eat too much meat! Make your meals smaller then what you'd usaully eat, and split them up into 4-5 meals per day.
"But I'm still hungry after my meals, they're too small!"
Maybe so but your body should be getting enough nutrients by the end of the day. Your stomach needn't be filled completely to get enough of what you need! After a little while your body will adjust to what you're eating. No more fats, sugars and carbs to be used instantly anymore. It will change, and so will you. You'll notice the taste of food more than ever as your palate recovers from being abused by those big macs and pepsi. So, we've got some very basic foundations now, on what to eat and drink. And, what to not eat and drink. So will that do it alone? No. Here comes the dreaded exercise!
Exercise:
Running. Jogging. Walking. Swimming. Biking, pushups, situps.....
Yup, that's it folks. Just a few laps in the pool each day, 30 minutes fast-paced walking each day or on the bike will shed those pounds more than you could imagine. Doesn't seem so bad huh? Some of these exercises are obviously more effective than the others. Jogging and running is better than walking for example. However you might have to work up to it.
Running/jogging/rest periods of walking will benifit you also, and probably will be the most effective method. Just jog 1 mile every two days and you'll start to lose those pounds, and lose that fat layer. If you find you can't run that far, don't worry! Just stop and start walking, have a small breather if you need to, and just carry on. You need to crawl before you can walk. Make jogging 2 miles a day, every other day a longterm goal and build from there. Do some pushups in the morning etc, you'll soon be able to more. After a while you might even look into using weights to help lose fat, the more you exercise the more you learn! it just needs you to take one step at a time. You can lose a lot of weight following this advice in three or four months, and inches off of your waist. But more importantly - it will give you discipline and an overall better state of health.
So there we have it, two simple formulas, that when followed correctly, are proven ways to lose weight, lose the fat layer and get healthy. So let's have a review:
Quote:
|
Controlled [healthy] diet + light to medium exercise = Weight loss + Improved health.
|
It really is this simple. If you follow these tips, you're sure to lose weight and get healthy. Only you can stick to them, and make sure you don't cheat. Good luck, and happy fat burning!

I hate how people who type these sort of threads out always have to portray themselves like they are some sort of guru on the subject just because they decided to read a few articles.
The info in itself isn't too bad I believe, I didn't read it.

White Potatoes aren't the best for you, but they're not that bad. The potatoe skin is very good for you.

Sweet potatoes on the other hand...

Re: How to lose weight, and drop that fat!
Yes, potatos do have a high number, however comparing white bread to a potato is a bit different. There is not much nutritional value from a piece of bleached white bread.
Sweet potato would be a better choice, but nothing wrong with eating potatos.

Re: How to lose weight, and drop that fat!
I had a renowned nutrition professor at Rutgers University who chose the potato as the best overall food to eat.
so since then, I have respect for the 'tator.
I also have a chart of the food nutrient index and it turns out white bread is very high up on the index of nutritional value, because it is enriched, sort of like a vitamin pill in the form of a bread slice.

Re: How to lose weight, and drop that fat!
I guarantee the OP's advice on its own will not work for the majority of people.
Why? It's a massive overhaul. It takes willpower, and a lot of it. Contrary to the beliefs of a lot of personal trainers, willpower doesn't come from nowhere, and people who are overweight often have reduced self-esteem which means they have less of this resource than most people, let alone the huge amounts MORE than average that they'd need.
The single most important thing when designing a regimen is to not go nuts while planning and set non-achievable goals - something tempting that almost everyone does. This then results in more and much more dramatic breaks of this regime, which is a big step towards abandoning it altogether.
What you need to do is do it gradually and become habituated to it. Start by drinking one or two less cans of soda a day, and walking around the block a few times a week. Get in at least those habits. Then work up slowly, until eventually you have a regime like the OP said.
Another important thing is that two weeks of "reasonable" diet and exercise is a thousand times better than one week of "brilliant" diet/exercise and another of binge eating, both psychologically and for your health.
Also I recommend soda water and sugarfree (Eclipse) mints.

Re: How to lose weight, and drop that fat!
Eat all the fruits and veggies you want (no limit! you are free to binge)
Avoid ALL fat (oils, creams, butter, lard)
Avoid Seeds and Nuts
Avoid Starchy Carbohydrates (Complex Carbs)
Avoid Olives, Avacados
ONLY BUY FATFREE FOOD (cheeses, dairy, meat...)
Eat Lean Meat in Moderation: (ONLY turkey breast, chicken, and egg whites) NO YOLK or if it says 99% Fatfree you can eat it (Beef Jerky, Fatfree Hotdogs, etc)
Eat Seafood in Moderation: (NO OILY FISH! NO SALMON OR SCALLOPS!)
*You dont really need to exercise on this plan but it just helps your wellbeing if you do some form of activity (brisk walking and sports are fine)
you will lose mad lbs. w/o counting calories
you can basically eat all the fruits and veggies, turkey breast, chicken breast, and egg whites you want and lose weight without much exercise! you just need to give up fat and read the label on everything...

whats wrong with tea? what kind of tea are you talking about? is there something that makes you put on weight in tea? I drink tea all the time, i live in florida, everyone does. I avoid soda and most of the other bad shit...except for beer and liquor...i drink too much....
but i thought tea was good for you. I drink it all day everyday. But i get unsweet tea. and just add sweet n low or something... tea by itself has no calories, carbs or fat...and only 10 mg of sodium per serving. and i think it tastes so much better than soda.

Re: How to lose weight, and drop that fat!
Is a half hour of walking/jogging a day really enough to lose noticeable weight?
Last week I had sort of a revelation, I pretty much just sit around and eat junk all day but I realized that when I'm just sitting around all day I could be getting in shape. I've given up all soda, fast food and all meat except fish. And I've been running for half an hour and walking for half an hour every day for the last week.
I'm like 6'2" and 220lbs, I'm pretty strong but also fat, not obese, maybe not even overweight by too much, but I'm really out of shape and have bad stamina.
My college has a free gym but I only go to class two days a week. Will an hour and a half, 2 days a week of lifting weights do enough good to be worth it in addition to the hour of running/fast walking a day?
Also, I have asthma but I never exercise so I haven't used an inhaler since I was a kid. I don't really want to go get a prescription so is there anything I can do to help me stop wheezing, the wheezing usually goes on for hours after I stop exercising and it's tough to get to sleep. Will it just go away eventually when I get into better shape?

Yes, as long as your diet is good any type of physical activity will help to noticeably reduce fat. As for your wheezing, you may not like this answer but I think marijuana helps to reduce swelling in your lungs. So smoke a little bit after your workouts and see if the wheezing stops. Clean smoke though, preferably through a vaporizer, but if not through ice water in a bong :P
