Why?
Why do I seem to only attract losers, that are going no where in life, don't care about anything other then what's happening right in front of them and are just plain stupid to boot.
Am I really expecting that much? I just want a NORMAL (or rather not fucking mental) guy, that:
Lives in the same country as me (preferably one of the 2 cities I live in!)
Has a head on his shoulders, isn't some loser that's going to be working a deadend job all his life.
Want's to travel the world, make a career for themselves, has some sort of ambition!
Or am I really that terrible of a catch that I don't deserve this? I've got plans, life goals and direction in my life. I like to party, smoke up, and am laid back. I'm of low-average appearance, but I'm not hung up on it. I'm polite, and generally considered the smart ass/the laugh of the group - (which I'm told can be rather intimidating to some males?)
I attract males, generally as friends (I'm often considered one of the 'boys') or has friends with benefits/fuck buddies, but its never anything more then that and lately its started to irritate me.
I've been single around 2 years now, I've liked it but its growing old now, I'm ready to start getting into something more serious, and I don't come with the emotional baggage from a former relationship because it was long enough ago that I'm over it. I'm not actively 'looking' (because that never works) but grr!
I don't really know the point or what exactly I'm asking in this thread, I don't make them often, it's not like me to 'cry out for help' as such because I'm generally a fairly secure person.

Re: Why?
Why is his job a problem?
What's wrong with a dead end job? I'm aware that maybe his lack of ambition might mean to you that he doesent want to go anywhere, but maybe not..
Thing is, if you work in enough dead end jobs, you're still going to pick up knowledge and experience, like an avelanche picking up skiiers and animals on it's way. And experience means that you wont allways be in a crappy job.
Perhaps the guys you meet are just testing the water or whatever? Perhaps they are just thinking about what career path to take?
Also, quitting the 'friends with benefits' thing might be a good idea?
I dont know, but I figure that guys arent going to bother putting the effort into a relationship when they can get the sex for free..
"I just want a NORMAL guy"
But that's your biggest problem right there!! :)

Re: Why?
It sucks, but men effectively only go for a woman based upon her looks... if the looks are of a suitable standard, they'll begin to assess the rest of her.
People may say I'm superficial and that men often care about a girl's personality first and foremost, but they're most likely deluded or bullshitting you. So yeah, attractive, interesting and challenging women will tend to win the best males.
There are actually studies conducted that assess the difference between how men and women feel attraction for the opposite sex. Apparently women seek men who have high 'survival' value, which includes ambition, confidence, social proof, a decisive personality, an ability to establish an emotional connection, adaptability for social situations and on a lesser note, looks (there's more, but I'm lazy). Men, on the other hand, seek women who have high 'replication' value, which boils down to the ideal hip to waist ratio and various other physical indicators of good health (long hair, good skin, longer legs, nice hips, etcetera).
So yeah... erm... it's a sad truth but I once read a quote that made me sit back and think. The person was talking about a statement that their friend made:
'Thank God I'm an ugly guy, rather than an ugly girl.'

Re: Why?
^^It's true. Even though looks dont make a relationship, your appearance will be what first attracts a male.
When my boyfriend approached me, I very much doubt he was thinking "hey, she looks like she has a great personality!".
But then, I dont see why that would be a problem, Kate. from your pictures you look kinda pretty.

Re: Why?
haha I KNEW someone was gonna pull out that normal thing. I use that term loosey, just something normal would be nice compared to COMPLETELY FUCKING CRAZY that I've had to deal with in the past hehe.
Friends with benefit thing comes out of what I wanted at the time - but you're right, I've cut all of that out in the last couple of months which I suppose is an alright start?
The ambition thing comes with the job thing. I mean I will be working a deadend job in a few weeks, but thats whilst I attend university - I see that as resonable, working to get myself to a better place, to achieve a goal. What I don't want is some guy thats been a pizza boy for 3 years and doesn't want to even try any better. Maybe I'm a snob? Or I'm picky.
Actually I could be, a lot, more picky. But then I'd complicate the things that actually matter.
EDIT:
Durell (sorry if I spelt it wrong) that sounds about right, you describe everything I basically see as attractive in a man (add a decent dress sense and into the arts and bingo!)
And thanks yoyo :p I don't mind my face, by body is the issue in my eyes.

Re: Why?
If i remember rightly you are so not 'low average' in the beauty stakes.
But i'll assume , in my misogynistic way, that like all women you are totally incapable of looking in a mirror and seeing what is really there. Its genetic I guess :P
Secondly, if you want a 'normal' guy maybe you should try being a 'normal' girl.?

It's also polite to be modest, I find it very difficult to talk myself up if its about my apperence - I think anyone that doesn't have an ego double the size of what it should be talks about themselves like that.
I fixed the normal thing in my first post, i was more using it to describe something that I've never even slightly experienced before, I like weird funny guys normally, but I seem to attract crazy (and im not kidding) assholes! :p
And yeah, I know that I'm not very 'normal', but am I really that bad? Would I seriously make such a bad girlfriend?
I'm not as openly opinionated in RL then I am on here btw! :p

Hey it's fair enough if it's something you find unappealing.
Sometimes you deffinately have to cut loose.
One of my ex's worked with his parents in a pub. Fair enough. But then I realised he planned to do that forever. And when they retired/died he planned on taking over the pub.
Staying in the same crappy building in the same crappy suburb in the same crappy city for the next 60 or so years.
It's not picky to not want a guy who is evidently happy to do nothing forever but I think that the cute guy at McDonalds has big ideas on where he's going from here..

I don't know you well enough to say, and I'm no doubt wrong. But I'm guessing that like many many 'modern' women you rhead wants an 'equal' partner, your heart a 'lover' and your cunny a MAN.
Crazy assholes tend to still have an 'alpha male' gene and subconciously you're letting your ovaries do the boyfriend choosing.

Sounds about right.
Then why amoung the assholes, have I encountered the 'I LOVE YOU AFTER A WEEK' saps :(
I actually forgot about them. I attract one extreme to the other, I need a balance (the center being this 'normal'/'perfect' that every female wants).
This feels very pathetic, but its kinda been floating around inside my head for the past few months without me really venting it and what better place then here!

Re: Why?
One has to wonder, where do you meet these men in the first place? Have you tried hanging out in locations where you're more likely to run into the type of guy you'd like?
Hell, you're taking college classes again. Aren't you likely to find guys with ambition there? See if there's any student organizations that you're interested in, you're going to meet people with similar interests that way.
Don't let my horrid track record with the techniques scare you off. I'm just too damn timid to make them work.

If you meet someone, and you two click, these minor details won't come into it. If, at a later date, you let things like these make or break your relationship, then you deserve to be alone.
The whole job thing... sounds like a search for a provider. You're in university, you can get yourself a good job. Whats to say you can't have a hubby who works part time as a grill man in burger king and fraudulently collects a disability cheque from the government? Or a minicab driver who just loves driving and has no want to do more? Does their lack of motivation make them not worthy of your love?

Re: Why?
your looking for too many things at once
you need to prioritize your list
for example you wouldn't look at a ugly loner twice even if he is young, has a 124 IQ, wants to travel and is head of a dispatch department
so think about the thing you want the most and go for that
and as mentioned before don't let your pituitary gland push you around

Re: Why?
I think the fact that you do like to take drugs and party is a problem with the kind of men you are trying to attract. While it is possible to have ambition, be successful and do alot of weed, the two lifestyles generally aren't associated with each other.
Noone sees a stoned party chick and thinks "wow she's a successful ambitious person, just like me!".

I think you'd make a horrible girlfriend. No offense, but you sound like you want the CEO of a Fortune 500 company to come whisk you away to the Canary Islands, and spend every waking second on you. To do half the shit you said it takes almost an entire lifetime.
Be happy you find someone you can stand to be around longer than a year, because maybe 5% of that age group is doing well for themselves, and sorry, but the likelyhood of you ending up in that pool is slim to nil.
I was gonna chew Yoyo's ass for acting like the guy with a family job was a shitbag, but I think my point would be lost. Is everyone in this generation a self-centered harpy who thinks they're entitled to this princess/king lifestyle without working a day in the lives?

Re: Why?
She seems like she'd be content with someone who has ambition and potential. This is natural for almost all women. Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you?
Women like to know that they can be provided for. Shit, even when you're going out, some degree of wealth helps... you get to go places, concerts, shopping, coffee shops, rock climbing, whatever... through experience it helps you add spice and variety to a relationship. It just sounds like she doesn't want a loser who's going to exist in a dead-end state of 'How about we stay in again... I just want to sit on my arse and orbit the couch for the rest of my life. You know, my McDonald's job is enough to make me content'. Guys who are content with that little are often passionless dull motherfuckers who should be sterilised.
Basically, she wants a guy who has ambition, direction, interests and a certain level of maturity and intelligence. What the fuck is so amazingly hopeful or insane about that?

Sick_Boy, no i'm not actively looking.
Those that think I want a guy that can provide for me is wrong. If you're familiar with my posts in this forum your'll know I have a lot of feminist 'beliefs' so the idea of a man providing would piss me off.
I'd very much would rather, if I was to ever settle down and have children that I was the one out working, while the guy started at home.
Rabbitweed - I dunno, most people don't see me as a stoner. But I know that some guys would of course be put off by the drugs but it doesn't bother a lot of males as far as I know.

A guy thats going to agree with that with that is most likely going to be submissive and clingy. Strong stable ambitious guys don't want to be whipped up house husbands.

Re: Why?
So, kAtE-, I must ask...
Where do I stand on this totem pole you so hastily constructed? :)
Clearly, I'm one of those guys that doesn't even live in the same country as you, so I can understand that part. However, as far as the others, I'd say that's not the case. Nonetheless, I'm asking/saying this because our plans are fairly well known to any Totse reader and my slight ego can't help but make me think I'm somehow influential enough to exact a thread such as this. Apropos, I can't help but wonder sometimes with my rollercoaster past.
Believe it or not, however, the ego I have developed is still overpowered by my sense of logic, and that part of my brain strongly urges me to think that I'm not in any way involved in this.
So with that, let me tell you that you are by no means "low-average" in attractiveness. I know this because, as it was already stated, I am first attracted to females by how they look. If you weren't physically attractive to me, there's a fairly good chance that I wouldn't even speak to you. This is the honest truth and I don't care if it makes me superficial or shallow. The truth is, you're freaking hot.
You've got a great personality. You're funny as you are already aware, apparently. I could see how you may come across as a bit opinionated, but that's not how I personally see it. You know what you want and that's a great property in the opposite sex. I would know. I live in Japan, which is the fucking cultural superhub for female indecisiveness. (It's the only turn-off I've found in Japanese girls thus far.)
You're intelligent and you're attending a degree granting institution. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's stupid women. This is one reason I've become dissatisfied with attractive American women.
What I'm trying to say is that you're a one helluva catch. So it isn't you. It leads me to believe that it's your selection process. Perhaps you are picky. So fucking what? I'm picky as fuck all. The key to the whole process is to be as indifferent about it as possible. I don't mean "hook up with every guy" kind of indifferent, I mean "who gives a shit if I can't find the right guy right now" kind of indifferent. Easier said than done, right? The trick is to do more. Go out. Get the FUCK away from Totse. Smoke some more pot. Go dancing. Paint something! I know that makes you happy.
Just be confident that the right guy is out there and you'll find him whenever the time is right.

I'm an ambitious, but still in reality, intellegent(got a near genius level IQ, I don't show it though), average looks, and confident to the point of occasional arrogance. Sort of the type of guy you're looking for.
Let me give your a run down of what I find to be ideal.
-Smart
-Driven
-Confident
-Loyal
That's Ideal.
What I hope for is:
-Confident
-Semi-loyal.
Are you Confident Kate? Does it show? Confidence isn't being outgoing or even showing a lack of fear. It's pride.
Confidence is what gets people. Not being an extremist, for they tend to be really insecure, but a moderate, almost aloof.
You can't dress to be confident, you just have to be. It's all about the eyes. All about the eyes. You can tell so much about someone just by making eye contact.
Let me put it this way. I have the tendancy to be atract to girls who have extremly short hair. Why? Because it's an easy determinant of confidence; it either means she's really confident or really unconfident. The next factor are her eyes. I can't explain it but you can tell if you know what you're looking for. Then it's her demenor. Does she carry herself like she's driven.
Think about it. Don't expect to attract a confident male when you're proly not that confident. Ever think about what the guy might want in you? Losers are attracted to you, you're attracted to losers.
W/e You're not gonna change no matter what advice you recieve.

I'm an ambitious, but still in reality, intellegent(got a near genius level IQ, I don't show it though), average looks, and confident to the point of occasional arrogance.

Re: Why?
Well? Look on the bright side. If you're not entangled with someone now? Then you're open to someone who's not available now. He's busy in school? He's overseas? He's working on his masterpiece?
If you were involved now. You might miss him when he comes around.
On the other hand you can tell if someone is wacky by asking this question: were they born of woman? If so, they have flaws. Many of which they can't even see... Flaws that they even think are assets. Which, how could they even be corrected?
For instance. You're no longer 10, but if you could meet your 10 year old self? How much would she diss you? You're post-teen aren't you? Though a 10 yr old girl might well admire you as older but not too old?
She might have summat to say about your A-dull-t BS. No doubt some of her observations would be spot on & some would be as goofy as all get out.
It is a puzzle innit? Who has time to be perfect? Who can fix/cover everything?
On the other hand? Lots of College girls have kids. You could be one of them...for better or worse. Or you could carry on & be in your late 30's hearing "The Clock". We all have too many options these days. Even if they're just options that we have to take time to consider & reject.
Welcome to the Puzzle Palace. :D

Re: Why?
Kate the first thing I have to ask is.....how old are you? The reason being is because I didn't even MEET my wife until I was 28, and we are now about to celebrate our 5th wedding aniversary (very happily married).
I agree with the other posters that said you have TOO MANY things on your list for the ideal man. You need to scale it back and not focus on what you absolutely want, but instead think about the "dealbreakers". The biggest flaw I see is a direct conflict in what you think you want, as opposed to who the "real" Kate is.
The reason I say that is because in the months that I've mostly lurked and read the threads on Totse I've gotten the impression you are a very down to earth and fun loving gal. My point is many of these "ambitious, career oriented" people (male or female) are NOT that down to earth and are constantly striving for/focusing on superficial things. Also keep in mind if you DO latch onto a "go-getter" there is a very good chance he won't have time for you, the house, the kids.....or at least as much as you would want him to be. And often times they are constantly going "up" if they are a success.......bigger house, nicer car, better job. The downside is 10 years from now they could also be "wanting" a younger/prettier woman once age has taken its toll on YOU.
I realize I'm speaking in very broad generalities, and not EVERY CEO or vice president is some philandering creep that doesn't spend time with his family. Just like not every factory worker is a great and faithful husband. But I think you get my point. There is a trade-off good and bad for all the things you right now are seeking. While it may be great to be jet setting to Aruba for a long weekend with the "successful" guy you finally found......how much fun would you really be having there if every 15 minutes he is on his Blackberry or working his cell phone?
I know where you are at, truly I do. When I hit my mid 20's I pretty much gave up on the "relationships" with women and decided I would just have them around for play things. It was too much work and I didn't think with my mindset I would ever find the right woman that WAS independent, yet still silly fun.
And the partying aspect was a whole other monster in and of itself. Being a daily stoner I pretty much grouped women into 2 categories. They either did NOT like drugs and partying, and totally looked at me over their nose with a snotty attitude. Or they DID like smoking weed, but that was their WHOLE life and they couldn't responsibly toke and still be a productive citizen.
The end result is I found a woman that doesn't toke with me, but doesn't give me crap about my usage (ok, in the beginning she did....but only because she was with an alcoholic for many years and had many scars in regard to partying) And yeah, maybe we both could have "made more of ourselves" if we focused more on careers and schooling, but the fact remains we have a very fulfilling marriage and are incredibly devoted parents. Which for us means more than any degree or salary or other superficial "trophies" that we could attain if we wanted to.
Maybe I'm wrong in my analysis of you, but you seem a lot more grounded and intelligent to chalk up the meaning of life to whatever "title" someone is walking around with in regards to their employment. Its just a means to an end, ya know?

Re: Why?
Where did all these Executives come in?
You didna bring 'em did ya K? You wouldn't turn down a sales rep for Microsoft NZ if he was the proper kinda guy? Or an art dealer? Or a guy with the Dept of Fisheries or a dozen other kinds of jobs?
Must be the cash-envy within these other posters that is showing up... You can practically see their fantasies of US $100's piled to the sky, as the True Meaning of Happiness. :p

Re: Why?
Probably because you're so self-centered. Why me? Why can no one reach my standards? Woe is me, I can only find guys who live for today. Why is no one willing to sit down and come up with a name for our child? Grow up.

Re: Why?
Kate. I am the loser that you attract. I am the guy who stagnates. I am the guy who could do so much more but doesn't.
Let's break this shit down with rhetorical criticism - you are the rhetor, the loser's being is the artifact.
Let's examine the act, scene, agent, agency, and purpose of the unmotivated loser:
Act: Loss of relationship.
Agent: You and the Loser.
Agency: Clashing of lifestyles in rushed relationships.
Scene: (I think you're meeting many of these 'losers' at parties...correct me if wrong.
Purpose: Of course, my assumption is that both parties are looking for love.
Now, let's see which factor influences the others the most!
The act in your situation is the final product.
The agents have minor influence on the act, and influence on the agency, scene, and purpose.
The agency influences none of them - it is the obvious problem, but merely the surface problem.
The scene is the determining factor of the agents.
The purpose influences the scene, the agency, and the act. (Everyone's looking for love...so this has no particular influence upon the agents being here.)
Now, from taking a look at this, it seems like the motivation behind the artifact is such: Both you and the loser are desperate for love, leading you to search for love in the wrong places. Because of that, you meet losers, which creates a clash between a driven person (you), and the stagnant person (loser)...this all creates the final act of the relationship faltering.
Now, let's switch from deductive reasoning to inductive: We shall start with the product and determine the motive you need!
The act gone right: A lasting and productive relationship. For this to occur, you need to find a man who lives a life that doesn't clash with yours. In other words, you need to find a man who wants to be secure in his life and still have fun (that is pretty much what you're aiming for, right?). In order to do this, you need to quit 'going for it' too soon. In order to be at a place, personally, where you can wait until you know what you're getting into, you have to let go of the search for love (it seems as though you've placed some sort of conditions on love happening, which causes desperation as you go on blind to the fact that love has no conditions).
My advice from this rhetorical critique: Learn to be happy just loving yourself...from there, you'll no longer be acting out of desperation, and be entirely capable of finding a suitable partner.
I'm only 20 though, so fuck if I know what I'm talking about. ;)

Re: Why?
Trueborn, that post made me go :o You know if things were different... You know the situation is complicated.
Eye_Of_The_Watcher - Thanks! that post put a lot of things into perpective. I've fairly confident (I also have short hair :P ). My confidence has boosted a lot lately - partly to do with the fact that I'm getting into shape, and the other is that my degree at university is EXTREMELY competitive, I have to be out spoken, I have to learn how to be reconised if I want to make it and get the jobs when I leave the university.
Hexadecimal - I am probably looking in the wrong places, I can't help but wonder why there are a few males on totse that have shown interest in me over the time I've been here. Why not someone in the same city? I'm not a social hermit, I don't lock myself in my room and prefer to spend my weekends on the net so its not like the internet is my only connection with the opposite sex, hell I live with 3 males!
I'm not searching for 'the one' to settle down with, I just want something thats more then just sex. Maybe my standards are too high? I'm not a snob at all, I have friends from all ends of society (thats a terrible way to describe it, but its close enough).
I just don't understand WHY I can't seem to attract guys for something meaningful. I do admit, that I have wanted JUST friends with benefits amoung those 2 years, I mean I enjoyed the single life but now.. no, I'm over it but I just don't seem to be getting 'what I want' (which maybe, I find difficult because I like to get what I want haha).
Thing is, I'm not rejecting guys left right and center, I haven't 'rejected' a male for a relationship since mid last year (remembering that that WASNT what I wanted then, I still had baggage, and I find that extremely unfair to expect someone new to have to deal with shit like that).
For those that ask, I'm 20 in 3 weeks, and I have a pic on the totse gallery, or here: http://img170.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture1098va8.jpg
Oh and to whoever thought that this was a 'woe is me' thread - I stated at the start that I don't make these often, I hardly ask for advice and I had just come to a point where I wanted some peoples opinions and basically some reassurance!

Re: Why?
Damn...just on looks alone I'd at least give you a one-night stand...and I'd tell my friends too. :P
You're just barely 20, and you're expecting guys to be going somewhere with their lives? I don't know if you've been paying attention to the world as a whole the last 5 years of your life, but our generation is shit across the board. We're in college almost primarily to get drunk, stoned, and fuck; working dead-end jobs to bide our time until some miracle happens (because we haven't yet figured out we have to master our self); or doing jack shit all while we wallow in pathetic self-loathing at our poor self-image.
Just be glad that you're actually doing something for yourself right now. You're ahead of the curve if you're actually working towards a degree in college instead of screwing around and getting shit-faced day in and out. My suggestion: Give it a couple years for the boys to finish turning into men...and don't go for an older man to skip the wait, they'll pretend it's real (and being much more experienced, they'll be able to fake sincerity quite well) and use you for pussy.
One last thing: Feminism killed young love. Women sought empowerment, and they ended up turning themselves into as big of whores as men - because of that, especially at a young age, making the decision to change the way you live your life for the benefit of self and partner seems entirely fruitless.

Re: Why?
Anyone else get a laugh from people saying how attractive Kate is, whilst Kates first words in the thread were that the only types she attracts are losers :D
I have a full time job with a future, working towards a uni degree, a property of my own, a car, many skills a guy 'should' know, don't have my head up my own ass (all these traits isn't gloating just telling it how it is)...
And *dun dunnnn* single. bleh whatever, according to this thread I'm overdue to get the trophy hottie I've been holding out for :p

You attract what you put out, or transmit. I think it is the whole drugs/alid back/party/etc. that attracts the 'go nowhere' guys. You ma have ambition and goal, but I'll say it probably doesn't seems like you do on the outside. Oh, and you are quite pretty, so quit that excuse.
