Default How can I capture small wild birds?

I want one as a pet. Are there any plans for a trap, or strategies or anything? I don't want to hurt it or anything. I live in Florida too, we have some cool birds here, even the occasional parrot.

Why not just buy one?

It's the same with my spiders, I don't buy wild caught animals, because they might have problems adapting to their new enviroment, and besides, they migth be sick or full of parasites...

Another thing is, that you don't know how old they are, or what their temperament is like.

Furthermore, not all birds have the same needs, and it doesn't exactly sound like you've done your research (no offence), but you should at least read a couple of books on the species you want, and make sure you can take care of it, before you get one.

If you do that, and get a bird from someone who keeps them as a hobby, I'll bet you'll have a lot more success with the project.
To just go out and catch a random bird, is not the right way to do it.

We caught a bunch of little wild birds at an Audubon camp I went to, to band them and such. To catch them the counselors stretched a big [5'X10'] net between a few trees in the evening, then came back the next morning and there'd be 2-3 birds in it. The net was maybe 1/2" mesh and made of of very fine black threads.

I've seen old bird traps. Think superlarge mousetrap, with a net attached to the bar that snaps down.

I know what most of the birds around here eat and their behavioral patterns and such, I'm not exactly planning to catch an Egret or Osprey or anything.

1. Take 2 twenty foot tall poles
2. Ask your neighbor to borrow their yard
3. Get a gossamer net and stretch it between the 2 poles.
4. Trap birds.
5. ????
6. Profit

Okay, i'll give you a plan.

First you find out what bird you want, where it's often at and what it eats. You then find out what store you can some similiar food at. You cover the spot where it's usually at, and when it shows up, shoot it with a 12 gauge shotgun. Profit!
