Choose your most favorite Linux distribution
Choose your favorite Linux distribution, and state why you like it over any other Linux distribution.
This thread is for those curious which distribution they might want to switch to, or why not to switch to a distribution for any reason.

I was going to add RHEL, but the poll options I was limited to were 10 items. I have posted this issue and it may be fixed in the future.

Re: Poll: Choose your most favorite Linux distribution
Voted Ubuntu. Because I'm a *NIX noob and it's given me less crap than any other OS I've ever used.
Fedora looks cool and I like yum a lot more than apt-get but when I tried to install FC6 it kept leaking like a whore so I had to remove it. Maybe I'll try to get it working properly on the weekend.

Wow, who would have thought that Debian would be the vote leader here, even beating out Ubuntu the Redheaded Stepchild.
I thought we were the minority here?

Re: Poll: Choose your most favorite Linux distribution
First of all this poll system has a huge error: it shows you how the poll is when you enter, this is wrong because this may (and it will) affect your decision. I will choose Fedora in behalf of Red Hat, now I'm tryng Debian and it looks good, I like the apt-get thing (for now) and I like the fact that all the hardware was successfully auto configured, but I must be fair and give my vote to fedora as I use this distro for much more time (and also because I have already seen that Debian is wining)
PS: Biopsy isn't your signature a little too much? Thanks for your comments about chroot in my disappeared ? thread

I'm pretty sure by this comment you're unfamiliar with how a poll works.
The polls here do not allow you to make multiple poll choices nor vote twice. This poll is also not a poll which is going to become inactive after a set period of time.
This means that as the days go by, and people participate in the poll, we get a simple cross section of which distribution more people like the most.

This poll is not about determining a minority, it is to try to detur some of the "Which distro should I use" threads and "Why do you like XXXX ditro more than XXX distro".

Goddamn it, Biopsy, get the fuck off your own dick. I know how a poll works. Did I ever say "Well golly, Debian's winning now, so that must mean it will always win and the poll is going to stop". No. I just mentioned that I thought it was odd that at that moment Debian had the most votes because I didn't think that there were very many Debian fans here. There are always threads about Ubuntu or FC, but I can count on one hand the number of users that I knew used Debian, which is why the poll results were surprising.

Re: Poll: Choose your most favorite Linux distribution :)
Debian, because everybody was doing it.
But seriously, because I had used Ubuntu for a while, and there were a few glitches I got annoyed with (mostly with sound and getting codecs for VLC (???)), so I switched to Debian in search of a distro that didn't give me that crap. Now I'm happy.

Re: Poll: Choose your most favorite Linux distribution
Gentoo FTW ATW. I know the user community is full of tards but after you've figured shit out for yourself you don't even have to deal with those tards. Also, USE flags ftw. Also, having to compile everything doesn't even take very long with -j5 set on a shiny new Core2 Duo.

Re: Poll: Choose your most favorite Linux distribution
I like a distro called Freespire, which is the free version of Lin spire.
It comes with alot of open source software to match windows versions of them. If I remember correctly, it uses KDE. Its still early in development, so trying to connect to wireless networks is a pain in the butt.

Re: Poll: Choose your most favorite Linux distribution
I've only tried th ecurrent version of Fedora, Ubuntu and Suse, of which I like Ubuntu the best.
Why? Well Fedora didn't like half my hardware, Suse decided it didnt want to install my video drivers and Ubuntu....well Ubuntu does everything perfectly so far (except play WoW).
Back in the day I tried Red Hat something and Mandrake something, neither of which I liked (probably due to not understanding linux well and being impatient).

Re: Poll: Choose your most favorite Linux distribution
Gentoo.
I recently joined a local LUG and it seemed to be generally felt that Gentoo was dangerous and crazy. I honestly only occasionally have problems, and none that haven't I haven't found a solution for as of yet.
As ThatFunkyMunki said, USE flags are great, and compiling from source doesn't take that long.
Gentoo was the first linux distro I ever installed (I know, not the greatest idea I've ever had) and though I've tried a few others, I've ended up back with Gentoo. Portage FTW.

Gentoo FTW.
Gentoo was also the first distro i got to work on my computer (i had tried debian, mandrake, and some others, but they gave me nothing but trouble). Gentoo is surprisingly user-friendly, yet you maintain control of everything.

Re: Poll: Choose your most favorite Linux distribution
Voted Debian. Why?
Here's how the distro jumping went for me:
Mandrake - Easy install, learned basics, apt-get started screwing things up (aptitude ftw), latest OS was looking like I'd have to pay for it so...
Ubuntu - Very user friendly, but I got sick of the African philosophy crap...
Debian - Used to the .deb packaging system by now. Relatively easy install. Loads of support... if you're willing to swallow your n00bishness and ask for help in irc.
Added Windows to dual boot... had to reinstall Debian, but the install disc did all the boot stuff for me.
All in all, it's damn good if you know what you're doing or have time to look it up.

Re: Poll: Choose your most favorite Linux distribution
I like Fedora. I started out with Ubuntu, but hated how the commands worked, so I switched over to Fedora and I really like it. For some reason, yum just makes more sense and it's easier to use.
I'm still a Linux n00b though, I've only been using it for a month.

Re: Poll: Choose your most favorite Linux distribution
I have Ubuntu in an old 64 Athlon, and it is good.
I have heard great things about Fedora and some good things about Debian but i haven't tried either of them my self so I went with knoppix, which I used to have and was very impressed with it, being at the time a complete Linux n00b. It was simple and worked well. It was also quite cheap so it doesn't lose any points to Ubuntu in that department.

Re: Poll: Choose your most favorite Linux distribution
I'd just like to emphasize again, that gentoo kicks fucking ass. Seriously, all these people say Debian is the shit, from their posts it doesn't look like they ever tried Gentoo. I'm telling you, once you get used to being able to configure everything possible [even specific features of a program that are optional are by default not installed unless you enable them in your use flags, as opposed to debian and ubuntu which just install everything with every possible feature enabled] you'll never be able to go back.

I've tried Gentoo quite a few times and the novelty of compiling all your own software with whatever options you want wore off quite quickly. I'd prefer to apt-get and have a binary installed in way less time than wait for a compile just so I can sneak a couple features out of the software that I don't explicitly need.
It's about what you want from a distro. I used to want ultimate configurability but these days I want a stable machine that's easy to manage and gets the job done without fuss. Gentoo is fine and dandy for enthusiasts. I like a lot of what they are doing. But trust me when I say this, for business and reliable machines "configurability" becomes way more of a drag than it's ever worth.
I went back.

I think Sabayon is great.
Everything is already done for you, and it's very versatile (Eg. Choice of graphical interface (KDE, Gnome, Enlightenment, etc.))

Re: Poll: Choose your most favorite Linux distribution
So far, I've played on Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat, and Slackware systems. Slackware's the only one I've had installed on something I owned, and while it was installed it worked great, so it gets my vote.
