Default Poll: Choose your most favorite *NIX operating system :)

Just choose your most favorite Unix-like operating system, leave a small message if you would like of why you enjoy it over the others also.

I've tried to include the most common systems available.

Linux.

It's not for any technical reason, but more of a personal choice.

I've been fond of Linux since I first installed RedHat Linux 4.2

Linux. I say this because I only have experience of that and BSD.

And I prefer Linux over BSD just over small pecularities.

Linux. I just started using Fedora Core 6, but it's pretty amazing how much potential there is.

I especially like Linux because of it's design model, with udev and haldaemon and the sysctl kernel interface, along with alot of the other intricate tools related to kernel profiling.

Plus, it's absolutely gotta be the safest kernel on the net today, with millions of people worldwide sifting through code just to exploit something to fix.

udev and hal are pretty new additions to Linux. It's just evolution of the software.

Hmmm. Not sure I agree with the "safest kernel" statement. Yeah, there are a ton of people sifting through the code... but there are also a ton of developers contributing, many of them contributing insecure code. Also, not everyone looking for exploits is also looking to publish them.

I really don't think anyone can confidently make a blanket statement like "the most secure ____" when it comes to such massive software. Someone ALWAYS finds a new way to exploit previously "secure" software.

I've heard very good things about BSD for those exact reasons.

I have a feeling I'd love Solaris, but Sun stuff requires too much RAM for my taste. Their software is excellent though.

Voted Linux because I use it (Debian), and it has great support for older machines. The knowledge base is pretty big too.

*BSD
Only because of OpenBSD.
Coding isn't THAT hard.
But efficiently coding a no 0day vulnerabilities OS is very difficult.
Especialy when you gotta deal with thousands of merely secure apps.

I would like to say MINIX. I love the idea of a microkernel OS. In fact, I am a microkernel slut. But right now, there are no drivers in there for any of my hardware making it difficult for me to actually use, and I'm sure I would be terrible at driver development, so I went Linux because I use it daily.

He's been gone since like early July or something....

I voted BSD. Not so much for a technical reason as more just personal choice.
I get on with most Linux's too, except maybe Ubuntu which always manages to hit the wrong cord with me...

and out of the BSD's I would go for FreeBSD and NetBSD, again for the little things. NetBSD can be a pain to set up, but its always ends up with exactly what I want on it, and nothing else.

Those are just my personal opinions and experiences. I'm sure many would both agree and disagree. I expect growing up among a house of bsd servers might have something to do with it .

Well, having only toyed with Solaris and Linux, I'd be votin' for my staunch favourite OS X. Best consumer-level OS on the market, far and away. Pity the bundled apps are such junk.

FreeBSD.

When it comes to Linux, Gentoo is my distro of choice. I must say, I can't stand the hokey African bullshit that Ubuntu is centered around. I've called it a gimmick since day one and I stick to my guns.

Oh yes, the theme is so crucial to the OS that you certainly can't change it. Ignore the fact the lead dev is from South Africa, while you're at it.

Gentoo's good though. We should have a 'post your CFLAGS' thread.

Missing option: Plan 9, mainly for the filesystem ideas, but also for the windowing system implementation and general code improvements.
