Default Decisions. (ladies, help please?)

So due to my recent health problems (constant headaches with intermittent migraines that are unhelped by any sort of treatment thus far) the doctor has recommended that I stop taking the pill due the increased risk of blood clot and stroke.

This seems rather stupid to me. I'm not over 35, not a smoker, in good physical condition, and there's no history of any heart problems in my family. But apparently that doesn't matter and not increasing my non-existent stroke risk by half a percent is more important than preventing pregnancy, and the numerous other positives that go along with B.C.

I'm going to ask the neurologist about it whenever I get to go see him, but until then, I'm off the pills, and I'm wondering what other people would do.

Oh, and I've looked at the other forms of birth control and... no. I'm not getting any needles, no one is injecting something into me, and the ring thing... I just can't grasp how that works. And condoms are just bloody annoying when you're in a long-term relationship. Plus, they make sex just that much harder for me. I hate them...

So. Should I "risk" getting a stroke and take them, or not? I have very little faith in these doctors. They can't figure out a headache, for fuck sakes...

Get a Nuva ring. My GF wheres one for her period or some shit like that but it's a bonus that it's birth control.

Though, I think she complains about it alot, I don't know I dont pay attention.

My wife no longer takes any type of pill for just that reason - she was getting a migraine once every two weeks or so. She stopped taking it about 3 years ago (after trying a couple of different brands), and hasn't had one since. The doctor said her chances of a stroke were greatly elevated, even though she was about 25 at the time.

We did try the mini-pill for a while, but while it didn't cause migrains, it doesn't work as well as the normal pill, and cost a lot. Also, with the injections, we were worried about side effects lasting for 4 months....

Our current plan is that I pull out.

I guess maybe talk to your doctor about the mini-pill because it has less hormones in it than the normal one, or something like that.

I know this won't solve your dilema, because we are in a solid relationship, and a third child would not be the end of the world for us. And I am going to be getting the snip in the next couple of months.

Doctors aren't always right, but for the most part they know what they're talking about. You should probably listen to him. Try the ring thingy, I haven't heard too many good things about it.

I've been off them for a few weeks now, and that's probably not long enough for any real results, but the headaches haven't much improved.

I've just been reading about the ring thingy. FUCK THAT. There's no way I'm trusting that to stay in.

I'll definitely talk to the neurologist about it. But so far I haven't found much except for "side effects include increased risk of blood clot and stroke."

I want to know WHY.

Just use the freaking needle!!

You're saying you wont do this, and you wont use that, ect ect ect.. so really, what are your options? Apart from having your tubes tied, that is.

I know needles are scary, but seriously, it's just a jab to the ass. It's not like you have to do it.

Infact, when I get it done, I have this really nice nurse. She'll be chattering away and then she'll ask me some random question that I have to really think about, and then suddenly she'll be "okay and we're done here!".

Then she gives me a biscit and cup of tea. Also free condoms and lots of pamphlets on breast feeding and stds and testicular cancer.

Uhm just not have vaginal sex til you've talked to a neurologist?

*gasp*

Yes it possible it have a great sex life and not have a cock in your vagina.

Would you miss the the whole cock/cunny thang that much? Really? Most women tend to be a bit 'meh, nice but not essential' about the whole penetration bit.

Remind him what god gave him a tongue for and if you miss being fucked that much then there's always anal.

Have you considered an IUD? I know 3 women who have one and they all think it's great. You could also try using spermacide and then just having him pull out.

Your safety is more important than cock. Why risk it? Not being a women, I wouldn't know all of your options, but I would think the opinions of fellow women like Xiao and yoyo count for something. Yoyo has a good point too - don't come asking for advice is you refuse to have an open mind about other treatment options.

</relevant>

Now the whole reason I posted here was because I need to remind Xiao that when the dreaded buttsecks occurs, she needs to promptly make a very long narrative thread about the entire ordeal.

^^Fuck yes!

Xiao, stop goddamn dissapearing. And post more, damnit!

Also, after he butchered your pet slug, I really really hope that you're simply letting him have butsecks with you because you've managed to install ...the bear traps.

Oookay, everybody calm down. I'll make a list.

1. We're not having sex until I see a neurologist. Various reasons.

2. I can't use the Depo shot for reasons other than it freaks me out. It can contribute to bone loss, which I'm not willing to go for considering my bones aren't in the greatest shape already. Plus, the side effects are much worse than the pill. Hair loss, period disappearing altogether? Really, annoying as it is, it showing up once a month is rather reassuring.

3. The IUD. No one is sticking anything through my cervix. And the possibility of it coming out, or getting stuck... ugh. No. Plus, again, bad side effects.

Spermicide and pulling out isn't a bad idea. Doesn't seem too reliable though.

Bah. I'll just wait until I see the neurologist. Thanks guys.

Spermacide+pulling out IS reliable as long as he remembers to actually pull out. I could never use that method, because my husband would "forget" every time.

The depo shot is actually a pretty good method...I know at least 2 women who get it and neither one of them has suffered hair or bone loss. One of them gained some weight, but I think that was just because she ate A LOT. And why do you think not having the curse is a bad thing?!

If you're going to be this narrowminded about your birth control choices, I don't think you should be having sex.

<Now about me>

When the dreaded event happens, I promise to give a full account...That is if I'm not in the hospital having my butt sewn back together.

My older sister almost died from being on the pill. It caused her to develop a pulmonary embolism (multiple blood clots in her lungs) and she was in the hospital for a week. She was 22, I think. Our whole family had to get tested for clotting factors, and even my sister's came back normal.

I also had a severe migraine once on while I was on the pill (I've had tons of migraines, but this one stands out). It was the worst headache I'd ever experienced, my arm went numb, then my tongue and I couldn't talk. I was trying to tell my family what was wrong, but I could barely speak. I was tring to say "My tongue is numb and tingly" and it came out as "My my my my my my my my my my my my my my....hair!" It was freaky, I think I had a mini stroke. I'm fine now, but that episode scared me off the pill.

So I guess it's not that common to have problems with the pill, but it's not unheard of. My friend's older sister also got a blood clot in her leg from the pill.

So I'm in the same boat as you, pretty much all hormonal forms of birth control are out for me. Right now I just use condoms, but I agree that they're annoying.

My younger sister is on a different pill now, one that doesn't have a risk of blood clots. I can ask her which brand it is later, but I can't remember right now. The only thing is that it makes her bleed almost constantly, and I wouldn't put up with that.

I'm thinking about an IUD, but I'm worried about the risk for heavier periods because that would be gay.

I dunno what else to say though, you seem to have ruled out every form of birth control...Once a pharmacist convinced me to buy some sponges, but I have yet to try one yet because they're like the size of a hocky puck!

Edit - Dem, what medications have you tried for your migraines? I've had migraine trouble pretty much my whole life, and the only thing that's worked for me is Maxalt. It's expensive but it literally stops migraines in their tracks...

Eep. You just totally freaked me out with the story about your sister.

I've never seen the patch, nor heard about it other than that one Seinfeld episode. Maybe I'll look into that.

I've also got Maxalt for my migraines. Doesn't really work. Neither does Zomig. They both just make me sleepy. And my new prescription for Maxalt is 5mg, and I was taking 10mg before. Fuck knows why.

Xiao, how am I narrow-minded? I've been extremely susceptible to side-effects in every medication I've ever taken, usually getting the worse ones. Why would I risk bone and hair loss, or the potential for surgery if the stupid IUD gets stuck in my uterus just for convenient sex?

i have heard from my doctor that hormonal birth control can contribute to migraines, in which case the ring or shot could both be just as bad. i am on the ring and it stays in fine and you really dont feel it at all. as for the shot, you can only go on it for 2 years because of the bone density loss. oh and i heard the patch is no longer available because the hormone levels were so high they caused more trouble than other methods. i dunno if this actually does you any good but the doctor probably does know what hes talking about.

Yeah, I've heard the same about the patch. I think it's off the market too.

I have little faith in my doctors. They always wrongly diagnose me. Most recently, he sent me to get an x-ray of my sinuses, and the next day I went to the hospital to see my uncle (who is the only good doctor I've ever met, when all else fails I go see him and he's always right, but it's just too awkward talking to him about birth control) and he said an x-ray would be absolutely useless.

Hence, little faith in doctors. And my old doctor was worse. "Oh, these antibiotics aren't working for your non-bacterial infection? Here, take stronger ones! And we'll just pretend I don't have a legal obligation to take a blood test to see what's actually wrong with you."

An IUD won't get stuck in your uterus. I suppose it might be possible for that to happen, but then it's also possible that I might be killed by death rays from Mars, but I try not to worry about it.

Go with the pull out+spermacide or just get pregnant or just don't have vaginal sex.

*ahem*

An Imbedded IUD is still effective, but it can be painful and may need to be removed. There is a risk of surgery and/or sterility if an IUD becomes imbedded.

Honey...Any medication or medical device can cause problems. Like my sleeping pills can cause hallucinations, bloating, headache, depression, sleep apnea, addiction, suicidal thoughts, dry mouth and flatulance. The only one of those side effects I've experienced is dry mouth and like you, I too am very sensitive to medication.

And there are some bad doctors, but most are okay.

Umm.... Imitrex for Migraines. It might be the same shit as what you already said, but I can't be assed to figure it out. Plus, it's really expensive.

No more sex for me. EVER.
