since we use gas(oline) for cars to run on why dont we just fart into them that would work since methane is cumbustible and so why couldnt we just like have holes in the car seats that collected the gas from our farts whenever we had to go?
http://i9.tinypic.com/4cayw49.jpg
here is a diagram that i made i dont knowe specifvially how it would bwork though but why cant this be done???

i think bcuz youd have to fart like 50 times to go 1 mile
but
maybe we could harvest cow farts or something
i think were onto somthign

They kinda do in China. They have busses with huge bags of methane on top. Collected from rotting shit.

I'll believe that when I see some evidence. My bullshitometer is in the red zone here.
Did anyone see that Mythbusters episode on methane farts? No? Well it turns out that after running a fart through a mass spectrometer, Methane makes up about 2% of a fart, and a person only farts far less a volume a day than you would think.

Re: cars running on human gas
In regard to gas buses in China:
http://www.paulnoll.com/China/Commer...s-gas-bus.html
this shows a natural gas bus with the bag on top. (not necessarily from human waste)
I can't find an online source about them making gas from waste, but from my own research I'll say that it's entirely possible, and more likely to be agricultural wastes than human waste.
http://www.informinc.org/chinacrisis.php
the "China's Methane Resources" heading about halfway down the page here talks about China inceasing dependence on natural gas, but not from methane digesters. The next heading down is also relevant, which says that china has 2500 of 500000 buses running on natural gas.
So we see that China is running buses on natural gas with bags of uncompressed gas on the roofs of the buses. Most of it is mined from what I read.
http://english.cri.cn/3130/2007/04/12/481@215504.htm
this short article is about methane production from agricultural waste in rural China for household use.
http://www.motherearthnews.com/Alter...wered-Bus.aspx
this article is about a methane powered bus in the USA.
apparently they power a small fridge on methane generated from their own waste.
and I can't resist posting the wikipedia article on methane generation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biogas
and if anyone is still interested I'll add what else I know.
the CO2 in the biogas is typically "washed" from the gas by running the gas through water.
China is innovative in not compressing the gas. Other countries, France for instance, compress it.
And that fridge that runs on a small amount of methane from a family's own waste? well, guess what. Fridges used to run on gas or kerosone. They can essentially run just on heat energy. So if anyone can find some heat energy falling from the sky and focus it on the right part of the fridge, they can run a fridge on the sun while the sun shines.
I'm working on doing this myself, looking at ways of focusing the sun with aluminium reflectors made from drink cans.
This focused heat energy can also power a stirling engine, which is a closed cycle external combustion engine that provides motion energy. Look it up on wikipedia. A lot of little-explored possibilities here.

Re: cars running on human gas
And you go to the gas station to fill up on baked beans, right? =P
It's a start. Eventually, SOMEONE will come up with a car that runs on human farts. But until then, I prefer gasoline.

It could be feasible to collect methane from sewers to use as fuel. Also, become an hero, PH

Landfills provide a better quality product. Less purification.

litre for litre cow's exhaled breath has more methane due to stomachs, so there's a higher chance of ignition. human farts may have barely enough methane

Re: cars running on human gas
For optimum efficiency, of course, you'd have to have a gas line actually inserted into everyone's ass, or else you'd lose too much in the seat / your pants / the air.
Oh, and also a line in everyone's mouth. You wouldn't want to lose fuel by burping.
You could also have a tank full of rotting corpses giving off gas. Those would be considered the "hybrid" models.

Re: cars running on human gas
Landfills provide a better quality product. Less purification.
This just reminded me, I can't remember which country this was in, could have been here but I'm not too sure. Some brilliant bunch of randoms solved the "what do we do with it once we can't fit any more trash" issue. Somewhere, someplace, there's a landfill site which was once a valley but now a small mountain, as tends to happen, and it's been turned into an artificial ski slope. Artificial snow makers still run mostly from the power grid, but all the ski lifts and hotel are powered with methane gas. The landfill's covered on however many meters of earth, mind you, unused for a few decades.
Kind of unrelated :/
edit: harvesting the gas makes the whole endevour sustainable.
