Load-testing vBulletin today
Nope, this is not an April Fool's prank. I am load-testing vBulletin today. That means that I'm going to allow a limited number of people to use the new BBS system and see what kind of a load that puts on the system.
If you want to check it out, click this link:
http://www.totse.com/community/
If it gets too loaded or bogged down I'll shut it back off until I can fix whatever is causing the problem.
P.S. I re-wrote the crappy BBS conversion software that comes with vBulletin to allow me to do incremental data migrations, so new messages posted in UBB will be migrated over to vBulletin's database once per day until I finally shut UBB off. That means anything you post on UBB will eventually (probably) show up on vBulletin.

Can we still call it The Ultimate Bulletin Board?
Will you change the layout to the way it is now in UBB, leave it as it is or make a new one all together?
It also feels a little crowded. Maybe you could space out all the info a little bit more?

Re: Load-testing vBulletin today
I keep getting messages that the server is too busy.
Also, I believe the vBB interface could be cleaned up a _lot_.
10 posts per page, screwed up navigation bar, user profile edit page has a bazillion duplicate entries... yeah, it's cool and it's about time, but it really needs work.
I guess that's the idea of giving people choice instead of converting overnight.

Re: Load-testing vBulletin today
Jeff, could you look at some of the following?
1. It looks out of place. Could you make it look more like the UBB Board?
2. The colors are different from the rest of the site. Could you tweak one or the other?
3. Please give the servers more load space for the new boards.
4. Please enable the Private Messages.
5. Please enable IMG tags in the Signatures.
Could you also answer the following:
1. Are the thread ratings purely aesthetic, or do they have some effect on the thread?
2. Can you disable IMG tags for certain users instead of whole forums?
3. Could you extend or shorten flood control for different users?
Thanks.

Re: Load-testing vBulletin today
vB is nice and all, however if it ever is implemented then like the above posters said;
-Private messages are useless, thats what email is for.
-Image signatures are the worst things to ever happen to discussion forums, however I don't think a 1 line, ~80 character signature would be too much as long as the option to turn it off will be available.
-Sans a few details, it looks very similar to the current BBS, although the titles in the dialouge boxes are a little obnoxious, but things can only be taken so far, nice job.
Mind sharing the load data on the servers for vB compared to UBB? I'm a bit curious as to the difference.

Same again.

Seconded. I think they're useful and a good idea and will result in people not having to post their email addresses publicly whenever they want to talk to someone.

Oh god, what a fucking retard. Just how are image sigs going to help the board? All it's going to do is clutter up every single damn page with 10 ugly POS photoshops that I don't want to damn well look at and that make the site take forever to load. One line text sigs are okay I guess, but images, or paragraphs, or ones that allow markup? Get the fuck out.

No VB displays the registration date and post count beside the person username I think.
Anyway theres gonna be a shit load of new features which we've all been waiting for, but Jeff seriously, keep the avatars/signatures out.
I just hope the archives get transfered over or else I wouldn't want VB... thats 7 years of totse history in there.

Well, I don't think that we need to know how many posts are in a given forum, but not my call.
Love vBulletin or hate it, UBB is on the verge of collapse (again) from all the use. Something needs to be done.
I support the use of private messaging. I belong to several other boards where it is available, and in my experience, it's a damn handy thing to have.

Re: Load-testing vBulletin today
Okay, my turn to make suggestions.
I like the idea of having an avatar. I want to put one of my MS-Paint drawings up as mine.
If we don't have private messaging, I would at least want some other way to privately contact someone. On MGCBTSOOYG LostCause locks any threads specifically directed to other users, and it's difficult to get others' e-mail addresses. I think some of us might want more privacy than others... if it's possible, maybe allow each person to choose whether to accept private messages?
On other forums, signatures can make threads really damn hard to read. If you have them at all, make sure that they're limited. It's not like it's impossible to go without a signature anyway... you can just have something in notepad ready to copy and paste to the end of each post. And that's what some people already do.
The simplicity of our current layout scheme does have its charms. I think it's best to try for a balance between functionality and navigability (is that a word?). But I definitely think that all these bugs in UBB, such as the ones in profiles and links, have to go.

I hear Vbul actually has a profile page that works. Just put your email there. Anyone who wants to contact you can look in your profile for your aim/msn/email.

Who is afraid of change, we love change just don't make the change real big. We love Totse and it's the essence of Totse which binds us.
Having said that, your doing a wonderful job,how about beta testing the new VB by selected users...
I was one of the few 143 who posted on the new VB and apart from certain problem it was fine, just keep the teal color look it's really nice.
UBB is the past.
VB is the future.

I support the disabled IMG tags completely, but avatars / pictures in profile be enabled? I know, I know, people will go crazy with goatse, but the
mods could be able to disable avatars for the guys who go crazy with tubgirl / lemonparty/goatse.

Cool. Wish I had a chance to post on it though. Are you sure it's not the combined load of two forums running one server?

Re: Load-testing vBulletin today
Anyone know if vBulletien will be able to handle our text overflow problem? The method of breaking strings so that they go onto another line is well and good for spammers, but it seriously messes with long URLs.

It'd automatically wraps URLs without breaking them, so there's no problem.

URLs have to properties, and what it does is merely truncate the first (the displayed property) with a "..." if it is too long.
So yeah, it'll fix all of that bullshit.

Re: Load-testing vBulletin today
Not bad. Glad there is some progress here, however the header for the posts are a bit distracting and stand out a little much. Here is my minimalist artistic suggestion: http://tinyurl.com/32neaw
Made username font smaller, removed post count and location, and changed the blue to a less intense color.

Not bad. Still, the usernames should be to the side of the post... <_< >_>

Re: Load-testing vBulletin today
I say you close totse for a couple of weeks, add a bunch of mods/pc-experts to your msn if you have one, then redesign the site from the ground up, keep the TXT files, and the database of user, just a diffrent layout and shit.
you should also use google adds, because my crusty ass uses them, and I got 30$ in one month, notice that my site never gets more than 10 vistors.
