"But Dad , they're my mates!" (father/son stuff)
I have written before about my eldest (18 mallgothy type sk8ta boi)and the fact that although highly intelligent he isn't the brightest light on the Xmas tree.
This evening i was cooking the evening meal (sausages in a chasseur-wild mushroom bacon sauce with german potato dumplings) and at the same time trying to fix crippled son's laptop (format, reinstall, locate drivers, rinse and repeat).
Eldest comes home and slouches through the kitchen weighed down mightily by the burden of beer cans he was carrying.
Here in the UK he and buy and drink legally now he's 18 and i don't have a problem with that. Normally he buys that girlyfied fruity blue coloured vodka shite.
However the amount of beer he was schlepping gave rise to the suspicion in my nasty mind that perhaps he was planning an impromptu party and then i'd have the stress of coping with naked 14 year old etc and their irate not-so naked parents, the Peelers etc etc
So I stopped him. Here the conversation:
Me:"why all the beer? Party?"
Him:"Nooo, just got some for some mates"
Me:"Let me guess, these mates are under 18?"
Him: "yeah"
Me: " you really are as thick as shite and twice as runny, aren't you?!"
Him:"huh?" *dad needs medication look*
Me: "You do know that its a criminal offence to supply alcohol to a minor? And that its a hefty fine or even some gaol time?"
Him: "They won't tell anyone!"
Me:" Ya think? Son, every man I've ever known who has landed in prison , has ended up there cos he thought he could trust his girlfriend, wife or his 'mates'.Three can keep a secret if two of them are dead.""
Him: "But Dad, they're my mates, I trust them, they'd NEVER grass (that means 'rat' for the Americans among us)on me!"
Me: *resists urge to bang son's head against the wall til he gets some sense and goes back to making the roux*
WHY WON'T YOU TEENS EVER FUCKING LISTEN TO YOUR ELDERS??!!!
AARGGGGH

Because teens know everything.
I'm sure it happened to your when your parents tried to tell you something.
After he makes a few mistakes, he will learn. Hopefully learn to trust you then too.
Careful how you say things too, don't make it seem like you know everything, just point out a few potential problems. Then help him when he fucks up anyway, thats what parents are for.

Come on - if it's just him and a few good mates hanging around drinking a few beers there's no problem. Were they drinking in your house? If so, it's perfectly legal provided they had your/the mother's permission.

Who never did that as a teenager? I myself am not 18 but i have a fake ID displaying that age just to drink.
Dude, have some common sense. Unless he is supplying 8 year olds with beer, its ok.
Please tell us whats the big deal with underage&drinking?

Send a fake letter pretending to be from the police to yourself. Ask him to fetch the post, leaving the fake letter on top.
See how he reacts

My kids have been allowed alcohol since the time they were weaned (its a european thing), usually with the meal.
I have no problem with him drinking or giving alcohol to his underage 16/17 year mates.
But procuring in commission of minors is another matter. They're really strict on that these days..BIG signs where ever alcohol is sold.

Personally, I don't think it's that big of a deal.. I seriously doubt that any of his underage friends are going to deliberately turn him in. Actually, I'm positive. Where else will they get their alcohol if they get their source in trouble?

And the thread really wasn't about him drinking or supplying others but his relationship with his mates.
Like many of you his mates are different....of course. His mates would go through fire for him and would never grass him up.
Hell, if he didn't know better he'd come out with the 'bros before hos' crap as well.
Cos Dad (me!) may be right about other peoples mates but not his...oh no, his mates are true friends..[/sarcasm]

I do that now and again, but mainly because my dad did it all the time for me.
Is there not some legal loopholes that it's legal for an under 18 to drink in their own home with parent supervision at a certain age?
Like 14s up or something...
They're not gonna rip into every parent that gives his kid a glass of champagne for New Years or a beer for a barbeque.

Lawl I bought my little sister alcohol and my mum didn't even go nuts. Infact I bought it for all her friends too and my mum didnt have a problem with that either. Possibly because she TRUSTS her daughters.
I think that's where your problem is.

Re: "But Dad , they're my mates!" (father/son stuff)
I agree wholeheartedly about the sense part. Kids think they can always trust mates...Until they get pissed off with each other and one will go grass him up on something.
Only thing is with the law part regarding this situation, as long as the alcohol is being consumed in a private residence, children as young as 5 can consume it under adult supervision.
Your boy counts as an adult in the eyes of the law and his friends, as minors, are under his supervision.
The law's a twat at times!
But as I said, I agree about the trust thing. A load of the guys I've met who've done time have been there because a so called friend or lover has put them there.
Slags!

Yeah it's like that here too, it's hard to police, and frankly the cops (at least here) don't generally care where minors get their alcohol from, they just make them pour it out.

I find its only a problem if the "minors" are drinking it in the street.
Around here the Police go up to them and ask them where they got it. if they say "Some guy" then its all good and the police take it away.
Sometimes they say my shop and the police try and hassle me, bastards.
I used to get people to buy me alcohol when I was underage,I never had any problem.
Just curious...where in norfolk? I'm from thetford and I used to work at the Threashers there, but now I am in Cambridge.

If he has friends that stupid, he deserves to get caught.
Seriously. His mates are his mates. Why would any of his friends snitch on him? It doesn't make any sense at all, both from a practical and ethical standpoint. If his friends snitch, 1) they just lost a good friend. 2) they'll be in deep shit by their parents, as they're underage. 3) They'll have killed their supply of beer.
Methinks you need to give your son a fucking break.

People need to make their own mistakes. I mean, as a teen as well, when it comes to illegal shit like supplying alcohol to minors or drugs, there is a "it wont be me who gets arrested/the police wont give a shit" kinda attitude.
And until they find out for themselves, im sure he wont heed your advice, no matter how good it is.

Jack, a couple of things:
1, How old are these kids?
2, Supplying a minor is if you give them alchohol whilst not on private property (aka home...)
3, You can drink at the age of 12 in a private property aka home (others house etc)
4, If your cooking you can claim its a resturant which you can be 16 if accomplied by a meal
BOO YEAH!
I've had several parties and im 16. why would i tell anyone someone gave me alcohol i knowingly accepted?

You tell him, Jack. I'm very apposed to giving minors alcohol. Thousands of young people die all over the world each year from alcohol poisoning so you know it's easy to do, not to mention there's a heft price to be paid for getting caught. I don't see any reason to do something like that.

Maybe because you're not fully right?
All due respect, but no one will grass on someone who's getting them drink. All people do it for their mates, within reason.
If someone does, all him, and the trustworthy ones, have to do is deny it, can't prove he's giving them drink. And plus, if they're drinking in their home it's not illegal.
Unless someone has an accident, because he'd be responsible.
Also, this goes for everyone, just because you're older, doesn't mean that you're right about every little thing. Not each situation is the exact same.
I hate adults who think they know absolutely everything.
