"whoooo aaare you?" doo-doo-do-dooo
*Que CSI music*
([off-topic] but are there any girls here who wouldn't totally do Grissom??!)
Anyways
I was having a chat with my Ol' man the other day and he made the following point:
"You are only you yourself for a few years."
The rest of the time you are someone else's something.
Thinking about it I think he's right. Most people here where I live and who know me, don't know my name. I'm "****'s dad". I often introduce myself that way. Unless i'm talking to someone much older and then I'll often say "I'm *****'s son" (particularly as my dad is very well known and liked and his word carries hella weight with a lot of people locally).
I lived along time in Germany and 9 times out of ten I was "****'s husband".
I was only me for a very short period of time and even then I was often "*****'s boyfriend". Partly because back then men tended to be the ones in a relationship who weren't local, having moved for work etc.
The Fem-Nazis tend to bang on about how wives lose their identity in marriage and so become almost a chattel but really I think its common to us all.
Anyways I'm just throwing this outthere to hear your musings....

But yeah, you have a good point. I think I am myself at the moment, no spouse, and not really giving a shit about what people think, doing my own thing

When I was younger I was always known as my Father/Mother's son or so-and-so's mate as it seemed everyone I met knew either my Mum, my Dad or one of me mates.. Now I'm just known as that mental English bloke.

Re: "whoooo aaare you?" doo-doo-do-dooo
Well, I'm in university, so I don't count as anybody.
Still, I wouldn't say you become SOMEBODY ELSE, just a different version of yourself. You're not longer Jack the bachelor, you're ****'s Dad. That's still you though. The old "A rose by any other name...". I mean, when young women say "whoah, did you check out the teeth on ****'s dad", that's you! The least important part of it all is that you present yourself by your name.
Think of Zorro, Batman, all those guys. The world didn't know them for who they were, but that didn't make their accomplishments any less significant. Same thing with people born into the shadows of others. You think if Bill Gates' kid cures cancer, anybody's going to learn his name? No, he'll still be "Bill Gates' kid", because that's how he's remembered.
Sorry, I'm ranting. 4 hours of sleep and a lot of bourbon.

Re: "whoooo aaare you?" doo-doo-do-dooo
I don't like defining myself as such, but I've often been described as someone's son or someone's friend, or even someone's cousin. As long as they don't have a problem with it, I see no problem.
As long as they realize that I'm not an extension of someone else, it's cool. It's not hard to realize that I'm an idividual, regardless of looming family and friendly shadows.

Re: "whoooo aaare you?" doo-doo-do-dooo
I'd only do Grissom without the beard. I reckon he'd be a monster in bed. It's always the quiet ones you have to watch out for.
On subject. I've noticed that.
I like situations where I'm known for me. Like fucking off to the other end of the country to busk. I was "that girl with the harp".
Or in social situations, "you know, that fucking weird girl".
I reckon the trick is to define yourself by the things you do, rather than the people you do. Easier said than done .

I think that is a good point. We are many things to other people. Yet they are all a part of the portrait of who we are and really should not be viewed as separate from our "self".

I actually envision his character as being a very inquisitive lover, which would carry some interesting investigative techniques when it comes to love-making.

Well, it makes some sence, actually. When you meet someone new you can always say things like "yeah I'm ****'s brother". Ofcourse, they would have to know your brother in that situation.

"What are we doing tonight, Gil?"
"We're investigating the phenomena of buttsex and the correlation between its positive reputation and the actual experience for both parties. Now take off your pants."
It's the ONE experiment he does that won't involve those dead baby pigs. At least, I hope not.

It's not so much a loss of indentity as it is a method of saving time.
"Yeah, it was Mr. Smith."
"Who is Mr. Smith?"
"You know, Mrs. Smith's husband."
"Oh, yes, I know Mrs. Smith well and can now associate the person you mean to the comment you made as I have previously met her husband."
We all speak like this in Norn Irnd.

lovin the Who reference in the title. quality music taste, my man
what really messes me up is that by the age of about 3, every single cell in your body has replaced itself from the original cell you were born with. You are quite literally not the same person...i find that freaky as hell

Re: "whoooo aaare you?" doo-doo-do-dooo
Ah, the old identity over time nugget.
My view is that you being X's Girlfriend or, Y's son is merely another aspect of your own identity.
Along the same lines, there runs an argument that George Orwell and Eric Blair were not the same person (George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Blair) because Eric Blair was not known as an author, and George Orwell was not known as the little guy who enjoyed a pint down the pub in his wee english village. However, this is bollocks. Being George Orwell is merely a quality of Eric Blair - George Orwell's existence, (as long as we assume the existence of a George Orwell to necessitate the existence of a figure with all the qualites of George Orwell as we know him) is contingent on the existence of Eric Blair. Hence, your existence as X's girlfriend or Y's son is contingent on your own existence. So you're always you.

I want to fuck a beetle
I want to fuck it hard
Reduce it to the fetal
And then smoke some shard
I want to cum on a mosquito
Then eat some mescalito
I want to shove flies in my ass
Ugly despicable and crass
I love them all, the squiggly things
Inside the earth they are the Kings
In my heart they reign supreme
Thinking about them makes me cream (http://nihilizo.blogspot.com/2007/02/insecto-pornography-poetry.html)

Re: "whoooo aaare you?" doo-doo-do-dooo
That is so true, my most recent ex for 10 out of the 12 months we were going out I was referred to as "******'s Boyfriend* to everyone I was introduced to and all my friends like every time i walked up where like "Here comes ******'s Man"
The other part of the time I am referred to by my last name (everyone calls me my last name really ) or as "***'s Son"

Re: "whoooo aaare you?" doo-doo-do-dooo
I started out as ***'s boy, or *****'s boy.
After a while I was just Pete.
Never so-and-so's mate or some chick's boyfriend.
I always introduce myself as Pete and if they need any further information on who I am, I'll drop a name. I've found as long as you give them your name first and relational information later, people tend to refer to you as how you've told them to.
