Self-esteem for women: misplaced?
An article in the back of my school's newspaper was detailing a short play about "The Most Massive Woman Wins" or something like that. It got me to thinking.
We all know the media more or less demands that to be attractive you must be thin. Some women and girls cannot attain this and are then outcast. Consequentially, they self esteem is diminished... but we all know that.
There are two fronts that I think the majority of speakers that talk about this sort of topic are completely missing. The first is people in general, and the second in men. Yea, you heard me, talking about women's self esteem to men.
The first is the media. Women arent nearly as vocal to the world about "inner beauty" and all that jazz as they are within their own circles. I really feel that it would be far more effective to change the outlook of the general population with respect to stereotypically less attractive women.
The second is men. Men are the main problem, in my opinion, in what drives the attractiveness or one person with regards to another. "No fat chicks" or "Dat bitch be ugly, dawg"; we have all heard that, havent we? It is true that you cant please everyone all the time, but it would be far more effective to change men in terms of how much they are willing to give less attractive women a chance.
So, it all boils own that I believe these sorts of things are speaking to a smaller and less effective group for chaning culture in general. I also believe it is harming such a cause because of this.
Discuss.

Re: Self-esteem for women: misplaced?
Interesting points, but don't you think men are not quite as to blame as you protray? I don't think it's truly men who dictate what women's fashion (cos that's what it is; it's a fleeting obsession). Sure, we guide it a little as to what our preferences are, but if it were truly us who guided it, then women throughout history would always be desired as thin, because men's instictual desires are, presumably, relatively constant.
However, in history, plumpness was a sign of attraction. Medeival women were preferred to be more on the plump side as thinness denoted a poor state. The more well fed and rounded a person in the medeival ages, the more attractive they were.
If you ask most reasonable guys who don't claim to have cars that run on 'bitch-juice', they will more than likely say that skin and bones is not the most attractive look as the media dictates. Perhaps this is just me but seeing every single one of a girl's ribs is somewhat of a turnoff. I personally am not a fan of the women who look like they'd snap in half.
But if it's a more extreme matter of size you are talking about, then perhaps the reason for the unnatraction is simply biological; an overweight person is generally considered less likely to produce healthy offspring (as they themselves are unhealthy). It is fertility and potential for birthing that biologically we are attracted to, so it's hardly men being picky.
What I do believe dictates this ultra thin belief system, however, is other women. They are the ones primarly behind fashion magazines and corporations who decide what's 'in' and what's 'out' this year, and it's mainly other girls, i think, who put pressure on their peers to be thinner.
The fashion, I think, will fade in time, just like it has before. There's not really any way of speeding it up, and making men feel guilty about what their biological impules tell them isn't going to help. That's just my view on things.

Ever pick op cosmo?
Women are to blame just as much as men. When parris hilton dies someday...THEN you can blame men almost 100%
But until that happens. There isnt much we can do about it. I feel bad for women. Men have their struggles as well however.

There's always going to be something 'wrong' with your body.
Such is life.
Grow up and get used to it.
Alot of the time, you can't realistically expect someone else to boost your self esteem, you have to do it for yourself.

Re: Self-esteem for women: misplaced?
I hope the OP realizes that women do not go on diets and dress fashionably and put on makeup to attract men. As far as that goes, most couldn't give less of a shit what we think. They go through those routines because they don't want *other women* to judge them too harshly. Get women to stop being so unbelievably rotten to each other and you'll have a solution. Oh, and I'm all for burning those goddamn "girly" magazines along the lines of Cosmo and Vogue, because they set most of the standards (more so than hollywood)

Re: Self-esteem for women: misplaced?
Yes, it's true we do have these images of 'perfection' paraded around us a lot of the time.
But honestly, I don't think it matters.
At the end of the day people will still seek out others they connect with mentally and physically.
Those that say 'no fat chicks' are either doomed to a life without any sex or are naturally attracted to different women.
You can't expect the media to take responsibility for your own self esteem. Do some soul searching, the only person that can empower you is you.

i think women should have less self esteem so they get out and work that fat off rather then look terrible in front of society. No one wants to see a self confident ugly chick.

Re: Self-esteem for women: misplaced?
I start caring the day women can't ride their way through life on looks alone. There's two sides on the bullshit coin my friend
Why are you posting on the internet instead of exercizing your muscles to cum slower, lifting weights and whatnot to look better, working on your career to get rich and buy into all kinds of shit to increase your penis size? Whoops, it's as if both genders have plenty to be insecure about

You'll still be ugly and have a small penis. And you don't get a good job by snapping your fingers either. You FAIL I tell you, FAIL

Considering you can be more successful if you're hot than if you're smart, and if thin= beautiful nowadays, there's always going to be vanity as a result.

Re: Self-esteem for women: misplaced?
Women do play a big part in their own self-image, just as back in victorian times, they weren't forced to wear corsets, they wanted to. A generalization I know, but it wasn't men who wanted their girl to lace thinner than the rest, I think it was like a running competition between women.. who had the smallest waist. (I do love corsets by the way, and they're not as unhealthy as people think, besides which, victorian women didn't lace down as tight as people see in most of the drawings and some of the photos. 20" was average)
Having said that, looking around S&A as I regularly do, I see a lot of guys (MANY of them probably virgins) saying they "wouldn't pork a fattie" or call going after any girl who isn't thin "chubby chasing". I reckon this attitude is a big problem.
I personally like my women on the larger side, or at least curvacious. I do enjoy all shapes and sizes, so long as they're fairly natural. A thin girl who was born that way is great. A wider girl who's dieted to within an inch of her life is disgusting.

Re: Self-esteem for women: misplaced?
Do you think many Spartan women would have been fat? No. Because they ate healthy and were very active.
Know any girls that live healthy life styles and are active that are fat? Probably not.

Fat women are unattractive, period. We can't just "reprogram" ourselves to suddenly like fat girls, just like women can't reprogram themselves to like fat guys instead of muscular guys with 6 pack abs. Aside from a small percentage of the population who have some fucked up fetishes, it's hardwired into our brains to seek out sexual partners who are healthy and in good physical shape.
If fat women want men to like them, they should hit the gym and stop eating shit instead of blaming men and "society"
