I would like to begin by saying that my A.P. English teacher is a dried up old whore who thinks that doodling while she is talking is a cardinal sin. I knew she didn't like me and she knew I didn't like her. Nevertheless, I tried to behave myself and not be an asshole to her. Then one day she gives us an assignment to write a short story about anything we want.

I wrote what was, in my opinion, a great story. It was inspired by various cool things that I was thinking about that day like The Highlander, psychic powers, Fight Club, and a lot of anime shows that I had been watching. It was told from first person P.O.V.

I turned it in expecting an A, but the next day, I was called out of Latin class and asked to come to the office. I was thinking to myself, "I haven't done anything wrong, so maybe it's just a message from my parents or something." I walk in and see the principle, a counselor, and two uniformed police officers. Now I know that I am in some deep shit. They tell me to come with them and take me out to a waiting police cruiser. I was on the verge of shitting myself.

They take me to the police station and lead me to a small room with a metal table and one chair. I sit down and one of the officers asked me if I knew why I was there. I said I had no idea. Then, he laid down a copy of the story I had written. He said that the last paragraph of the story, in which the unnamed main character imagines what he will do to his classmates the next day (yeah, it was violent), had been construed as a threat by my teacher. They also tell me that my writing bears a resemblance to Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold's writing.

I spend the next hour and a half convincing the cops that I am not a terrorist or a psychopath. I explained that the entire story was a work of fiction and that I had no intention of hurting anyone in my school.

They eventually decided that I wasn't a threat and let me off with a warning. They also said that while the subject matter was inappropriate for school, it was very good writing, which made me feel a little better. They called my parents to come and pick me up. As you can imagine, that wasn't a very pleasant ride home. My dad understood that it was a misunderstanding, but my mom (who spends all her nights watching Court TV and Dateline) is screaming at me the whole time. She said that it was my own fault because I look like a goth (I don't. She thinks that black T-shirts are goth attire.)

I go to school the next day, expecting an apology from my teacher. Instead, she tells me that I will have to write another story and that I would lose 50 points for turning it in late. I tell her in the nicest way possible that she can go fornicate herself with rusty pole. She then sends me to the office, where I find out that I will spend the next week in detention.

You wrote a nasty story and your teacher, a woman of logicially bog-standard intelligence, did what any American of bog-standard American intelligence would do - she called the cops.

If you'd have given it to me I'd have reported your imagination stolen and confiscated those emo-badges with witty catchphrases that you wear.

When you rewrite it try to think outside of the, cliché, box. (See what I did there? It's a cliché about clichés! Oh golly.)

You should do a really tongue in cheek story about a cencorship crazed nanny state that locks people up for writing or discussing innapropriate things. Make it subtle, but still obvious.

Fuck subtle, make it obvious as fuck. And add a part where the main character is interogated by the police, but he lies his way out and gets revenge. Well maybe not that last idea...



And I would have tried to get that story back.

I once turned in a short note on Satanism (Laveyan to be precise) and during next lesson the teach told to stay and have a talk with her. So I stayed...
And she finally told me that I shouldnt write such things because other teachers might not like it, she's ok with it, but others might start giving me a hard time because satanism in all its forms is very badly seen where I live. Yeah, I got off with a warning against some dickheads, but she still refused to grade it and I had to write about Islam.

And please, don't get me wrong! I certainly agree that your school's reaction was over-the-top, it sounds as though it was even bordering on the ridiculous, hell, it sounds surreal and almost insane.

Perhaps your teacher is a "dried up old whore", and maybe your school is run by a pack of jittery morons, and maybe the police were acting improperly. (At the very least, they let you go.)

But yeah, from a disinterested view-point, it is simply obvious that submitting such a story is asking for trouble: especially, when by your description, your teacher is the archetypal crone.

PS: If you are not being arrested then you do not need to accompany the police. (That is at the very least, true in New Zealand.)

At least where I live if you don't do what the school or police ask or say then you are expelled and resisting the instructions of a police officer which is like 2-3 years in Maine
