People who use the word lady indiscriminantly...
...to refer to womankind in general freak me the hell out. It sounds so sleasy and dirty old man like. Probably due to the fact brothels call their whores "ladies",
Not all women are ladies (just like not all men are gentlemen). Stop throwing around words just to score points with sluts.

Re: People who use the word lady indiscriminantly...
According to my dictionary one of the uses of the word is:
"A polite term for any woman."
Like "The cleaning lady".
So...how about...using it to say:
"She's a lady, she's a slut."
Even though it softens the derogatory term slut, it's still applicable.
Basically, it's the words that accompany the word "lady" that, more often than not, define it.
I think politeness is good whenever possible.

Re: People who use the word lady indiscriminantly...
A lady?
Well she's all you'd ever want
She's the kind they'd like to flaunt and take to dinner
Well she always knows her place
She's got style, she's got grace, she's a winner.
Well she's never in the way
Something always nice to say, Oh what a blessing.
I can leave her on her own
Knowing she's okay alone, and there's no messing.
Well she never asks for very much and I don't refuse her
Always treat her with respect, I never would abuse her.
What she's got is hard to find, and I don't want to lose her.
Help me build a mansion from my little pile of clay.
Well she knows what I'm about,
She can take what I dish out, and that's not easy.
Well she knows me through and through,
She knows just what to do, and how to please me.

A lady is a woman with inner dignity to match her beauty and manners.

I've always thought that lady was a polite term for a woman; certainly not a derogatory one.

Re: People who use the word lady indiscriminantly...
It always sounds sort of American when people say lady. "Hey, lady, c'mere!"
I much prefer "Miss". I got called miss by a guy in a train station in Cornwall, made my day. "Orrite, miss!"

And practically completely lost amongst the younger generation, I'm sad to say. Although there are a couple to be found.
I've always thought it a complementary term too. A lady is a woman of class. EDIT: Because I can't be bothered being eloquent about it /EDIT.

Re: People who use the word lady indiscriminantly...
I know I'm going to hear it over this statement but anyway's here I go. I still like and am attracted to ladies who are lady like for a lack of a better term. Women who don't curse and spit and wear dirty old jeans with rips in them and so on. Guess I'm still old fashion. The new bread of females are some sort of a hybred. They can curse and fight and go at it as well as any guy and to me that is a turn off

Re: People who use the word lady indiscriminantly...
'Lady' is a term of respect. I dont know how you get anything else out of it. Yeah, brothels might have called their girls ladies too. 'Lady of the night' has a completely different connotation, but generally...'lady' is the exact opposite of slut or whore or anything derogatory.
Anyone that would actually be offended by that term has some serious issues, either that...or they're just looking for something to bitch about. Fucking neo-feminists.

That is so sweet jack and it means a lot to me. *huggles*

Well, I wear jeans. I really don't find dresses very practical. I will swear when I think it appropriate to add emphasis, but not in general conversation and very rarely in public.
I'm not certain about this "new bread" of females though. I think a lot of young girls do this, but many grow out of it...as do young men.
I've never been in a fight with anyone. I've never seen the point in that.

I second this. Its fucked up now. I saw someone make fun of a couple and the guy just kind of ignored it and the girl almost kicked the guys ass. Chicks are too masculine these days man...I hate that shit. On a side note there is nothing wrong with jeans. They dont have to dress too lady like just fucking act like it.

I'm curious...was there a post here that spawned this thread, or was it something in real life?

Oh alot of posts make me want to say this. It's a word too often used by sleasy guys who want to make slutty girls feel special. And it's use by the prostitution industry really gets my goat. I hate euphamisms.
