Hopefully most of you are familiar with this, if not it's an excellent lazyass way to catch a lot of good fish, especially catfishies.
Get a screw top milk jug (not the pop-top, trust me), and attach a two to six foot length of fishing line around the handle. Get your hook, tie it on with some nice, smelly bait (I recommend nearly anything dipped in tuna oil) and set in the middle of the lake. Check at least once a day.

Never heard of that. Might try it sometime.

You'll need a boat to go retrieve the jug as it rapidly is dragged around the surface of the lake.
We've caught some really big fish using these, though, down on Rough River Lake. More catches per piece of bait used than a trot line, I bet you that much.

How long should I leave it in the pond? Also is the jug suppose to go all the way down?

No, make sure the lid is tight so that it doesn't sink for good. It will go up and down under the water if there's a fish attached, somestimes for a decent amount of time. I'd say leave it in the pond for at least 4-12 hours. If you drop it in a lake, wait a day and hope nobody makes off with your jug, lol.

Hmm good idea. I bet you could adapt this to just about any large, floating object for wilderness use (log, nalgene, whatever),

Milk jugs are simply convenient because they're easy to access, you can get quite a few in a not-too-long period of time and go set yourself plenty of jugs, have much better results with single-hook-and-bait milk jugs than a trotline with the equivalent number, I guarantee that.

It's illegal in some states. In Fl., it legal on private property only. Just a heads up.

I can understand that, as it wouldn't exactly be beautiful to see a thousand milk jugs floating on the lake. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out on a state-by-state basis though.

Re: Fishing for fish with milk jugs!
I get you. ^_^
There's all kinds of little setups you can make yourself to catch fish.
I didn't write this but I've used this (http://www.instructables.com/id/EDLCFKOYY8EPLK0ED1/?ALLSTEPS) method before to catch bait fish. ^_^

Re: Fishing for fish with milk jugs!
Ok, I hope I did it right. I added the fishing hook to the screw-top, and I tied 20 feet of fishing line to the handle and I threw it around the middle of the pond. I only made one. I threw it around at 2:30 pm, and if I did this correctly I should go check on it around 2 am?

Maybe more often than that. A lot of fish will just nibble the bait off without getting hooked making the trap useless. This is espesially true if the hook is too big for the fish. That's why you're supposed to yoink your pole up to snag the fish when you feel it nibbling. For this trap I would use a relatively small trouble hook seeing how you don't really have to worry about it getting snagged on something. That's the type with three hooks if you didn't know. ^_^

When I go fishing I usaully use liver as my bait. I added some liver inside the jug, and my pond has around 300 fish in it.
So i can say bout now, I have had atlease a couple and and I'm going to see if I did catch any, but I won't eat them.

Re: Fishing for fish with milk jugs!
the way we always did it is if using milk jugs we tied the string either around the handle or under the lid...got to keep the lid screwed on..if using coke bottles we tied them under the top as well, and the poster that said it was illegal to chum in some places florida law is it is illegal to chum from the beach or any bridge sand bar etc, but its legal to chum from a boat.although we never had to chum, just regular fishing in the bay we can catch black tips and nurse sharks all day long

Re: Fishing for fish with milk jugs!
you dont knock holes in the jugs, and if you do it the way i do and use a little thread tape under the lid then there is no chance of leaking, i dont know why you guys are thinking the jugs are gonna sink, all you are doing is tying a line to it
