Has anyone here ever made money out of breeding animals? I was thinking about breeding animals - maybe cats, guinea pigs or even rare spiders ... Spiders are hard though, I've been wary of arachnid breeding ever since my scorpion gave birth.

My aunt used to breed dogs. It's like a brand name, they have to be pedigree and have a good family line (ie. parents won a lot of dog shows etc).

Yeah, last winter my father's dogs had puppies a month before Christmas. 8 If I remember correctly, once you have all of them registered and immunized, it's much easier to sell them, around Christmas he sold most for 800$ each I think (though two were stolen, and one ran away ) Immunization isn't much money, about $50 each? Another thing, pet stores will buy them, just a a much lower price (probably half, mabey closer to 300$).

Then again there are things like the health of dogs, the cost of food, and puppies have to be a certain age before you can sell them (About a month old), which means you have to be able to care for nearly a dozen dogs for that long.

Note: This is New England, cost/prices may vary, also, they were sold near Christmas time. The dogs I'm referring to are purebreed German Shepards. You don't need a breeders liscense or something like that to sell a litter, but to actually make a business from it, (not money on the side) I can't say, you should check rules and regulations for where you live.

In fact, his dog is due for her second litter any day now Just too bad I'll be in New Hampshire all next week to miss the "miracle of birth".

[/sarcasm]

Anyone want to buy a puppy?

Fish breeding is easy buy maybe not as much profit. Also I have heard reptile beeding was easy. I knew a guy who used to breed snakes and he said it was very easy.

MGB a memeber of totse used to breed all kind of reptiles (tutles, gators, ect) you might be able to get some info from them.

You could breed worms and open a bait shop, that would be real easy.

Why do you think thats hard to believe. That is actully quite cheap for a good background. I know a guy who breeds german shepards with at least one if not both of the parents being show winning dogs and he can sell them for up to $2000 a puppy.

I used to sell stick insects to kids for £2. The shops charge £4 so people just bought them from me.

At adult i'd control the number of eggs kept to have about 20-40 babies a week, the next week i'd sell them. They'd all sell cos little kids are like "ogmgmzzzwtf it's a stick that moves lolool!!!".

I'm thinking of selling giant african land snails. You get 100's-1000's of babies at once and they sell for £10 in shops here. They can take ages to mate though.

A friend of mine sells pedigree boxers for around 1600$ a pup. With an average litter of 8 thats 12,800$ extra every 9 months. Not bad for not having to do much. She probly makes 10 grand after the costs for raising feeding etc the puppies. Making a business might not work out to well but for a little extra cash breeding could be an option for you.
