| Cunning Linguists Languages and their use. What languages do you speak and why? What do words really mean? Can you say things in one language that you can't say in another? Should there be a national language? How many languages should a person know and what are they? |

Best language to learn!?>
What do you think is the best thing language to learn? In my opinion, even though Mandarin Chinese is the most spoken language in the world, all the people just stay in china, and it's similar to Hindi, Russian, and Bengali, that they just stay within their country and don't have that much of an outside influence. I would say that English definitely is the most widly known language to a point. French is spoken in the most countries, along with Spanish. If you are intereted in business, French is the language of trade, and Japanese is a growing language. Is there really a 'best' language to learn? What do you think would benefit someone the most in life, saying that you already speak english, and don't want to stay within your country forever. Thanx

Re: Best language to learn!?>
Well, I think it depends on the person. You can't just say "What is the best color to wear" because certain colors benifit people differently. For me, German has proved very useful given that I have traveled there many times and I know many german people and converse with them on a regular basis.
You simply have to find out which language you would use the most and which would be the easiest for you to learn.

Re: Best language to learn!?>
If you live in America, then Spanish would be the best foreign language to learn, since it is near enough the first language of the country.
If you live in Canada then French and English are (obviously) the best languages to learn. Do I really need an explanation for this one?
If you live in England, then English, German, and French are the best languages to learn. France is just across the channel, and it would be useful to know the language.
German is useful, although many people there speak English anyway. When we went with the school, I don't think we spoke any German. Don't get me wrong, though. If you go there and want to learn, speak in German to people and they'll be willing to teach you a thing or two. One the whole, it's a fun and easy language, although that 4th tense may throw you off a bit. I still want to take German, even though they don'toffer it at my school.
English is the most complex language in the world (by syntax and grammar), although the traditional Chinese alphabet varies if you put a dot too far to the left or to the right. It would be a hard concept to learn.
So, as Zok said, it really depends on where you live and what you intend to do. I practise language as a hobby sometimes, and I've found German to be my favorite. Just look at a few languages, learn some basic syntax and conjugations and see which one you like speaking the most.
Hope I helped,

Re: Best language to learn!?>
I agree with TX279, spanish has helped me out before, online dealing items on diablo II, and in the city, I ordered once at mcdonalds in spanish when I knew the girl there was a native spanish speaker, and was having some trouble with english, my brother in law speaks spanish as his first language, and my other soon to be brother in law is both fluent in spanish and english. So if you are in america, especially the southern areas, spanish is the best way to go, and it's fairly easy too.
