About music affecting teens, this is my view. I listen to
-Cradle of Filth
-System of a down
-Old man's child
-HIM (got concert tickets ^^)
-Opeth
-Emperor
-Iron maiden
-Jack off Jill (a marylin manson opening band for a few years_
and a few more I can't think of right now.
I wear pants with chains nd stuff (tripp pants) blue jeans I have blonde hair to my shoulders etc.
I think music makes teens smarter, in the sense that we have might have more views and opinions on things then some adults. Only because alot of bands these days are contraversial, therefore the knowledge that may be learned (If accurate. Such as CoF, they have a good grasp on why they do what they do) can start interesting conversation and also many other good things. I do well in school, so obviously if you choose to it won't affect you there.
Basically it's a misconception that teens are violent because of music. Most teens probably don't have a grasp of what the music might be trying to say, therefore they take in things the media says (I've met some teen "Satanist" who have never read the satanic bible, but they like killing and death, just so happens satanism does not advocate any of that)

This is the problem with most young and infleuencable minds. They cannot draw the line between informative information and enteraining information.
Musik (generally) is information passed down for entertainment and should not be regarded as some question asked, insight given or opinion taken. For that you should reffer to books. Like the poster said, before you think you know anything about Satanism (I dont), dont recieve the information upon via Musik but via books, docu's, school, etc

Listening to and studying music can make you smarter. But music like that, no.

This is what the world needs more of, teenagers thinking they know something of politics or philosophy because of the undoubtedly extremist(left or right wing) lyrics of a band they listen to.
To "start discussions" you should have a working understanding of both sides of an issue, and I highly doubt you will ever get that from music.

I very doubt teenage angst bands are the cause of deviant behaviour. I hardly think music changes character. I honestly believe people are not influenced by 'hardcore' satanic lyrics e.t.c

I rarely listen to political bands, because they can't get their point accross for shit. System of a Down is seen as a political band, yet half of there songs sound like non-sensical babble. And when they do bring politics into the talking points, I'm generally left with questions, because they can't cite and backing or proof of it.
And that's why I think political agendas should be left in speeches and essays.

System of a Down’s idea of political lyrics is shouting the word ‘boom’ for three minutes.

I believe you're thinking of P.O.D.
Suppose I should also add something to the thread: I agree with Knight of blacknes. They're not too common, but I know of a few people who get their political views and comspiracy theories from bands like Rage Against the Machine, and they're pretty stupid in general. They don't listen to reason and they don't actually learn about any of the crap they hear in their music.

I think people listen to music because they think it fits the way they think/act, I don't think they act the way they do because of the music they listen to.

Its not a one-way street.
Kids listen to the music that fits their lifestyle, but their lifestyle adapts to the music they listen to. If not by simply the lyrics, but rather the image carried by the band. Vote or die?
I really dont think that kids are more intelligent by listening to music, especially REALLY shitty music. Any attitude they get is more often then not associated with blind pride, which you can see coming through in the OP's writing.

Re: Music affecting teens
Good political music will not give 13 year olds a few catchy facts to bandy around in their pathetic debates.
It may inspire people to actually reasearch issues properly for themselves. Do such bands exist? Arguable. If asked to give an example of this I would give 'Koyoto Now' by Bad Religion which, despite the title does not really talk about the environment but is instead mostly rhetoric, and only the stupidist people would start supporting the Koyoto treaty because of rhetoric so I guess the idea that people think 'I wonder what he is so worked up about...do I agree or not?' and do some research.
It may motivate people who already believe in a certain political goal or doctrine. This can be dangerous as people may start to find their politics led by the music.
But for me, it makes very simple points which are more to do with society and do not require further debate. For example: 'You think you're a rebel cos your smoking weed, there are kids in the world who are ten years old and all the wanna do when they grow up is explode.'
Of course the fundamental flaw of ALL 'political music' is that people will fight for what they believe in, they don't have time or the necessary framework in the space of a song to fully explore the arguments so they will present their side of the debate.
BTW I am well aware this isn't a comprehensive / entirely logical post but I thought I would try and give some food for thought.

don't look to that kind of music for answers to any questions, its all the same theme anyway...death and satan and all that crap.
system of a down is cool though. and the song called boom actually has some pretty neat lyrics in it other than the word "boom", to whoever made that assumption

Personally I feel that its not the music that matters, its the way it makes you feel,
so it can be beneficial or harmful, depending on how it makes you feel...
of course every has their own opinion (hard rock!!!!)

I see the whole kids getting stupid opinions from music thing, makes sense. Not disagreeing with that. What I do want to bring up is how the best way to tell if someone is a moron or a psuedo-intellectual is if they are a heavy reader. People who read a lot know a lot but understand less than the common man because they think they know everything. Obvious exceptions, of course. That's off topic though.

Some kids just listen to music they THINK they should like, rather than what they actually like. Not necessarily what is popular either.
Music doesn't really influence my life other than going to a show because I like the band. I have no band shirts at all.

i think people take shit way to far and over analyze things when it comes to music & youth. as far as i'm concerned, it's just music, nothing more. it's only more than that if you want it to be and make it that. i don't listen to music that nessessarily relates to life at all (though a lot of it coinicdentally may do so) or let it influence my lifestyle. i just listen to whatever i think sounds good. i think people really need to chill about this shit and look at it from a simpler standpoint.

ok, first of all, system of a down kick much butt. secondly, this type of music can make you more open-minded, because it exposes you to different opinions in a way that you find entertaining and easy to absorb. this wont make you "smarter" as such, unless you reserch the facts behind these political ideals, then form your own opinions, and act on them accordingly.

Re: Music affecting teens
Sometimes lyrics can say powerful things. Boom by SOAD happens to make some good points. However, more so in BYOB for example, they say a lot of shit but don't let out the underlying philosophy.
So no, it's not smart but at times if they say things that make sense you should consider it.
For example, I had a really emo friend on the internet who was a year older than me, and when I finally started asking him about why he dressed the way he did and acted totally bullshit, he'd always say "Stop talking to me about it, you CAN'T change someone's mind over something by talking to them on the internet." And yet, I was making perfectly good points and he couldn't argue them. So how is it that anything I could say would have any more power than if I was talking to him in real life?
Basically I'm trying to say the medium doesn't matter, but the message itself. So music is perfectly capable of saying some powerful things.

most teens are too stupid to understand the meaning behind the message.
most adults are too stupid to realize they don't know it either.
so.. music makes no one less ignorant. just louder.

Re: Music affecting teens
Music, ideally, leads to higher thought. Depending on what you listen to you will always be moved or inspired by the music you listen to. I find that the music that's inheriting the world lately is not inspiring higher thought or political activism or any of the other things people claim, instead it's breeding sheep who follow the message of the people who create the music. To be an individualist you have to be...an individual...don't just listen to music, toss a hand into the air and claim you've always "fought the power" wake up, open a newspaper, watch the news, get involved.

Re: Music affecting teens
I listen to bands lie Children of Bodom, Dimmu Borgir, Disturbed and Iron Maiden. Simply because I like them.
If it just so happens to be that some of their lyrics are loaded with their political views, fine with me, though they dont make me think any different.
Though I can tell that the type of music someone listens too says a lot about that person, for example, someone that is more open to louder and harder styles of any music (metal for example) is usually also much more open to knowledge in general. When I compare my pop-listening and metalhead friends I can see that the metalheads have much less trouble understanding complex things and well.. are smarter in general.
My musical taste ranges from classical, to metal, to hard rock and even some blues.
Not because of the band's political views, but simply because I think they make good music.

i don't know about you guys but i really like music that doesn't have sort of lyrics in it, like Post Rock, or just instrumental guitar..
oh and by the way, Music is a tool for inspiration, you either choose to listen or you dont, it won't make you dumber, nor smarter, thats up to you and what you decide to do with it.

The intelligence probably came before the music did, and this was probably mostly perceived intelligence due to the fact you associate rock with political messages and in turn politics with intelligence.
I mostly listen to rock/metal, but also to jazz and reggae. I dont listen to the message in rock/metal lyrics because I cant understand what they are saying, so if they choose to shout/scream/sing like this in the first place then they probably dont have any political message.
I think the tone/mood/pace and instruments used in the music effect you much more than lyrics you probably misheard, at least in the metal genre anyway.
