SPIRITS OF SALT

Synonyms: Chlorohydric Acid; Muriatic Acid; Hydrogen Acid; Hydrochloric Acid

10 lbs. common salt

20 lbs. common clay

water sufficient to make into balls. Distill while moist with a violent heat and rectify by re-distillation.

So you violently heat the moist salty clay-balls and distill pure hydrochloric acid right?!

Well if so I can dig it.

Not sure when the next time I'd have the chance to give this a go but it'd be a good conversational piece at the next chili-cook-off-2004!!

Opium makes me so mellow man it is really noticable to me when I'm here at Lab Tips. lol!!

If you guys ever get opium soak it in Everclear wih some kind buds for a day and strain the solids out and evap the alchol and eat the compound that is left behind.

Or you could buy 'Spirits of Salt' from your local hardware store.

Like I did in Hanham, Bristol, UK for around 1.59ukp for 500ml...

yeah you could, but I was under the impression that if you have a stronger acid -stronger than the store sells- you don't need the iodine. Is this the right impression?

wrong impression indeed, but it may be due to a confusion of the terms "strong" and "concentration" when referring to acids. HI, or hyrdoiodic acid, is the strongest halogen acid, much stronger than HCl. Strength here refers to the amount of energy given off when that H gets away from the rest of the molecule. Since I is a bigger atom, the H is thrusted off HI more violently than HCl, thus HI is a stronger acid, and it will take no less than this strength to strip the ephindrine of that stubborn O.

Concentration is a term that refers to all acids, weak and strong. It refers to the amount of solid acid salt that has been dissolved in water. Muriatic acid is 37% HCl, the rest is water and other stuff. Even if you had 100% concentration HCl, it would still be weaker than any concentration of HI. blah blah and etc. :-)

this is sort of o.t. but since a mod started it i figure it is safe to follow up

if swim found some poppy straw (maybe 40 grams or so of ground stems/pods) laying in a ditch somewhere, what would swym recommend for making the best use of it?
