Default quick answer needed please ..

alrighty .. doing the waterless a/b extraction

gotten down to the non-polar solvent where it says Xylene is recommended

im just wondering when u mix xylene and water does is separate into 2 layers? ..

ie. water and solvent layer?

im just wondering this because it says to perform cold and warm water washes .. and im wonderin if you mix both things together (solvent and water) they must have to separate somehow so you know what to extract

thanks for ur help

swim knows that if swim pours zylene into mother jar, it sits above the water layer, so swim guesses it would not mix and would sepperate for sure.

dont know what a water A/B is so swim couldnt help ya to much other than that bit of info.

but swim knows if ur usen a non polar, u should try naptha,, swim dreamt zylene and hated it, much prefere naptha as a np.

yes xylene and water will form two seperate layers. as with most petroleum products the water will always be on the bottom. washing the water layer with zylene washs the water of nasties that are soluble in the xylene. the goods are safe in the water untill its been basified. after the water layer has been based and the goods are in the xylene water washing the xylene cleans the nasties that are water soluble. the goods are safe in the xylene cuz they are no longer water soluble. once the xylene has been gassed the goods are water soluble again. make sense?

If swig has xylene in a sep funnel and adds water (hot or cold) it will seperate, the water is the botom layer. swig will want to shake the sep funnel for two or three min. and let set for 10 to 15 min, drain water and repeat until water is clear. swim suggests DH2O in this order hot/warm/room temp.

if both liquids are clear .. how do you distinguish between them?

does the water turn a weird colour if nasties are in it and the xylene stays clear? ..

thanks again people .. you guys are hell quick to reply

Is TCE (brake pad cleaner) an acceptable non-polar solvent that swim could use instead of Xylene or naptha? Swim read an acid/base E extraction method that used TCE and wants to make sure it is realistic.

Thanks.
