Default Cheap and Dirty Aspirators

I began with an old "bic" pen and an "expo" marker, the bic pen is the typical cheap white one with the black top and bottom while the expo is the most common type of whiteboard marker out there. To start pop the top off the expo and remove the wadding and the felt tip with a pair of pliers. Next drill a hole in the top of the expo marker large enough for the pen tube to fit tightly thru it

After this drill a hole in the side of the marker small enough for some aquarium tubing to fit TIGHTLY into it. The tubing shouldn't obtrude into the pen but rather stay flush with the inner wall. Next get some tubing and attach it to the pen. Aquarium tubing could be used but in the picture some tubing from a nebulizer (asthma product) was attached to it. Finally seal up eveything with some epoxy putty or something similar.

Sure I could write some more detailed instruction out but that means effort on my behalf so just get a general idea of how aspirators work before reading this. Sorry but I'm as lazy as... nothin compares.

Since the pics have been taken evrything has been sealed up with silicon and a straw has been added to the tip of the marker to increase performance. All in all I'm more than happy to say it can get around 10/11 torr with 9 degree water while consuming a rather hefty 207ml/sec. It's far from optimal but using a recirculating setup it could prove to be useful. Suction capacity is next up to be tested.

Aspirator vacuum pumps.

better suited to the lab tips forum, as they are not used for backyard ballistics.
