Re: Iodine-Potasium Iodide
Call me stupid but I think sulphuric acid will drop crystals out of the stuff.
Don't quote on that.
Madchemist mentioned something a while back about this.

Re: Iodine-Potasium Iodide
I think a chemist with a complete lab could do it, but I don't think it's easy.

Re: Iodine-Potasium Iodide
ok, if you wish..
phosphoric acid 85%--
around 48 dollars a gal around my little town
or better still there is a fert available at some h despots and the like (cheap) that contains
orthophosphorus/phosphonic which is also phosphorus acid as well as phosphoric acid
--actually two very competitive brands can be had all over the land
the radiation sickness powder mentioned can be used to convert the entire bag to the "good stuff'
dont believe me ?
there are many success stories perhaps one has made it into Rhodium by now
If not, it soon will be unless the knowing are keeping it to themselves
perhaps I should keep this mum

OK, confused again. I started off thinking that phosphorus and phosphoric acid were the same/similar. Then read a couple of posts wherein I (wrongly?) got the idea that they were different or not interchangeable. Now after reading Dan's post am I to assume they're the same or interchangeable at least? I'd greatly appreciate being put on the right track, thanks

Re: Iodine-Potasium Iodide
Fear, I think you were right the first time. Phosphorous Acid is what you want (H3PO3) not phosphoric acid (Which I believe is H3PO2, but I could be way off)
This is just from stuff I've read here, I have no experience with H3PO3, so take it with a grain of salt and let someone else verify it.

Re: Iodine-Potasium Iodide
Phosphoric -> H3O4P or as more commonly put H3PO4 also may be shown as PO(OH)3
Phosphorous -> H3O3P or as more commonly put H3PO3 also could be shown as P(OH)3
ortho-Phosphorous (o-phosphorous) -> P(OH)3 same as phosphoric
<note all refering to the acid form not a salted form>
They arent the same,, possible phosphorous could be oxidized to phosphoric,, but that would be a waste IF it where to work which im not sure if it would.
<edit - added info on ortho phosphorous as well as spelling idiocy changes)

Re: Iodine-Potasium Iodide
Hey Jib,
Yeah being ignorant in the field of chemistry as I am, it's tough to make heads or tails of some of the info here. But if you read Dan's post, isn't he saying he uses phosphoric acid? But then when you look at the context of that statement, it's not really clear what he's using the phosphoric acid for. To me it seems that he's saying to mix KI with H3PO4 but I'm just guessing...

Re: Iodine-Potasium Iodide
Thanks for that info Random. Now would anyone care to shed some light on what Dan was referring to in his previous post? Better yet, if you're out there Dan, would you, or Swid, explain what you'd use to make a red p sub (provided it's not top secret, lol). If it is I'd understand - you'd probably have to kill me right after you told me, but hey I won't mind as the suspense is killing me anyway
