cold acetone vs not-cold acetone
say one day swim wanted to wash something in acetone; and methods suggest using freezing acetone..
if swim cudnt get hold of a freezer at the time of washing; does using acetone at room temp make ne difference? what is the advantage of using freezing acetone?

Re: cold acetone vs not-cold acetone
I would say mook the advantage is a faster evap with ice-cold acetone.

Re: cold acetone vs not-cold acetone
Great point T. M. G.!! Afterall, if the tone is ice-cold, the act of being exposed to warm air creates the surrounding water vapor to condense and since acetone readily mixes with water, it is imperitive to keep a 25% by volume amount of baked magnesium sulphate inside the container for which the acetone is stored.
This way, as the condensation and addition of water vapor--->water enters the acetone, the water gets pulled and stripped away from the acetone.
Something never ever mentioned around the usual sites for Rxns is that Extra Strength Acetone found at Ace True Value Hardware is probably the most important and ultimately usefull solvent you could purchase and keep amongst your usual list of solvents simply for the fact that it is three-fold faster in evaporating.....three-fold stronger in its solvency qualities/properties for cleaning glue out of striker R.P....etc.
Look at it as Acetone Concentrate if-you-will.
Just something to think about.

is there a better way to clean matchbooks other than scraping swim knows there is but just searching for the less time consuming way...lol

Re: cold acetone vs not-cold acetone
So if you buy VM&P Acetone, it comes dry, yes? And if you keep it at room temperatures it will stay relatively dry... during experiments when you have to take it out, will keep dry, yes?

Re: cold acetone vs not-cold acetone
mook
freezing acetone dissolves less pseudo or meth
when cleaning meth with the acetone,,keep the acetone and evaporate it,,mix what is left over with what you sell..

Re: cold acetone vs not-cold acetone
VM&P is not acetone its naptha. the only way to insure the tone stays dry is to leave it stored with the dried epsoms in the container. when you want to use it just open it up and siphon some into a clean jar ((if using mason jars make damn sure you dont let the tone come in contact with the rubber lined lip of the inner lid. SWIM cuts freezer baggies in half and uses one side and lays it over the jar opening puts the inner lid in the outer ring upside down with the rubber facing up and screws it on the jar over the plastic bag. this insures no leaks and no rubber in your tone.)) thru a single coffee filter in a funnel. SWIM always pours his tone into empty bottled water bottles, (the 1 quart size) puts an 1/8 cup worth of dried epsoms salt in it puts the lid on tight and stores em in a cool dry place where the temp stays relativly even. if stored/stashed outside where the temps fluctuate from day to night then add a couple more table spoons of epsoms to insure there enough to take up any water that might be formed thru condensation. doing it this way inures that it is dry when ever your ready to use it.

Re: cold acetone vs not-cold acetone
The difference between dry and not dried and cold versus room temp. is the percentage of product that will dissolve and end up in the acetone you wash with. If you use this simple philosophy, you never have to worry about whether or not the acetone is cold or not or dry or not.
When you wash your product (the pseudo washes usually don't contain significant amounts in the acetone washes to worry about) keep the wash and evap it. when it dries out you will see the product crystals there amongst the crap. Wash this with acetone again and you will have more product.
"Special Note:"
If you let the acetone evap very slowly over about a week or so, it will eventually get down so that there is only a little acetone and water left. In a few more days the acetone is gone and most of the water is gone, if the product is of a high enough percentage of the desired chemical, you will have a suprise in the bottom of the jar that is unlike anything you have purchased on the streets. If you find such a suprise, make sure you wash them with acetone before the bottom of the jar is completely dry. If you don't, the crap will adhere to your new found treasure and mess them up.
Now back to the post........
This is a repetative process until you get down to nothing but crap.
This is a great way to have a little backup for those times when you fuck up and run out and don't have another batch in the works. It will also give you an idea of how much is being dissolved in a given amount of acetone. The particular acetone that jam speaks of is about the best there is. It can be used straight from the can as long as the can is kept tightly sealed. The best way is to use a jar with a tight fitting lid and transfer from the can to the jar when needed.
Of course, using epsom salt is not at all expensive, and as long as you oven dry a big batch of it at a time, its not very much work either. Don't forget that the dried salt can pull a tremendous amount of moisture from the air in a short time. Keep it in a sealed container as well. Moms rubbermaid is ideal.
Jam--
Why does cold acetone evap faster than room temp or.......say........hot?
