what chemical burns a green fire?
i was at work the other day, and i looked into the furnace after we threw in some gooey steel, and it was burning green. not the entire flame, but the bottom half and the middle was green fire. the rest was normal. does anyone know what chenical this could be? thanx for any help.

Barium compounds will burn yellow-green, and copper salts will burn blue-green.

Although barium salts do burn a greenish color, I doubt that would be it. It was probably copper salts, or it could also have boron in it. Boric Acid mixtures are typically used to make green fire for special effects.

Are you sure it was pure steel?
It might have been exposed to contamination where copper was molted in to the mixture. If this hapens then the copper would only come out if the steel was melted again. Mixing molten copper with air creates copper oxide wich burns with a green flame.
My bet is copper.
