Default Home distillery question

When making some kind of alcoholic beverage, is it necessary to use Brewer's Yeast? Or will any kind of yeast work? If not, what is different about brewer's yeast, and where can it be acquired? Thanks

Well, since there is such a thing as "baker's yeast" I"m assuming that brewer's yeast has some unique trait that makes it better for brewing.

PS: If you don't get many good responses here, try in DIY, they talk about brewing in the forum description.

Fleischmann's active dry yeast works fine and nearly every store has it. I ferment stuff all the time. The highly active kind costs about 50 cents more and it ferments a little fastter.

There is different kinds of yeast, for instance turbo yeast can ferment something it 1 day! Normally it takes 7-10 days.

theres something about brewers yeast that ferments a little differently... lets say you're making wine, the taste is a lot more "winish" than with bakers yeast.

if you are trying to make high proof alcohol and not beer (which would involve a wort solution made from yeast), go with corn... it will distill better.
