Have tried a dream or two but with no real success yet. Foun the problem in my iodine - it ws of the worthless variety. After researching on here again last night got the right type, 2%, and tried again. this time i got the crystals. However, after rinsing them several times and putting them out to dry they seemed to evaporate. Can anyone tell me where i have gone wrong. So far all hte info here has been most helpful, and i would appreciate it if someone can help me finish my dream. can u dry this in the presence of heat - like sitting in a dish on top of a hot stove?? thats where mine were sitting.
Thanks much for any help.

Re: iodine question
I dont know if you can do that or not, but thats not the way you should do it. What you want to do is after you get your cystals and wash them with dh20 you put them in like 10+ coffe filters, then take about 3 or 4 paper towles, stack them on top of each other and fold them in half.. so now you should have 10+ coffe filters holding your I and 4 paper towels stacked on top of one another and folded in half.
Take the coffe filters, fold them in half so they are the shape of half a moon, set that on your folded paper towels and fold the towels the other way now. so they are in the shape of a square, then put it on the floor and step on it really hard, dont stop, just step and rock back and forth.
Then if you have oven dried epson salt, which you should, you should put a fair amount in the bottom of a glss jar, fold a paper towel into a square again and set this on top of the salts in the jar, then take your I that you did all that other stuff to out of the filters it was in and put into two or three new filters, and put this in on top of the towles in the jar, seal the top, put away for a about 5 hours, change the coffe filters again and put back away for a good amount of time.. your done.

If you leave them out to dry, they will evaporate, as you found out.

Dry is better, because if you start with too much DH2O, then that will hinder the RXN.

newspaper or the brown paper grocery bags work well for drying your I2 after rinsing

Can someone offer insights on how to clean the I2? kneedragger gives it a good 5-9 times wash with dH2O in a Gal jug, decanting in cloth. Or lay the I2 out on a cloth, and give it a good rinse with that sink "squirter". Just wanted some insights on how well others wash it. kneedragger just washes it until the run off water is light brown, semi-clear. kneedragger tries not to rinse with sink squirter all the time because of impurities well water can leave on his I2. kneedragger has no basis for the standard of cleanliness and would like to input of others.

thax gizmo - havent had enough yet to store
just enough to try a dream, but will remember your tip. i assume it should be kept in a closed jar too, or will a ziplock baggie work if u have a small amount.
I am curios as is kneedragger - should the water run clear when done cleaning? Iodine is reddish/violet in color is it not, and therefore the rinse would never be completely clear?? not sure on this. thanx

Absolutely airtight, even with a jar one might find it to be the best idea of using plastic wrap or some sort of plastic to prevent the air from coming in through the threads. As for the color, I asked swim and they said that they have never personally had perfectly clear liquid come off of a rinse, but your product should be a silver-purplish-grayish color, rather than a violet-purple color, and don't forget to put some oven dried salts in the bottom of your air tight, light proof, container before storing to absorb any left over moisture.

Re: iodine question
Don't know if it matters or not, but swim dreams of I2 washed with DH2O, not tap water. Swim's theory is the less contaminants, the better. Storing I2 in plastic is not a good idea, as I2 seeps through plastic. Keeping it in an air tight container is a good idea. As far as swim knows, pouring water through it is good enough, as lond as enough is used.

Re: iodine question
Hello my brothers--
It has been quite some time since I have been able to visit the ole site. Chronic computer problems caused me to save everything to disk, data wipe the drives and start over. Documenting 20GBs worth of files was a shitload of work.
Anyway, I've still been doing lots of research and thought I'd add a little something to this thread.
Iodine from 2% tincture is a strange and sometimes unpredictable bird. There are times when it seems as though you just threw everything together and it came out so clean and dry the filters hardly even turned blue. Others are meticulously measured and timed and come out looking like silver slop.
I have a few tips that may give you something to consider when working with 2% tincture in the little 30ml. bottles.
Contrary to most of what you read, iodine crystals are not very susceptible to light. A brown colored jar is great, but not necessary. They are however very susceptibe to air. Keep the container tightly sealed at all times and limit the number of times the contaiiner is opened.
When the crystal extraction is complete and you have this hard silvery grey lump in front of you, don't leave it sitting out. Put the lump on a piece of clean cardboard about 4X4 in.sq. Then break the lump up into small pieces using a plastic knife or similar. Scrape it into a small glass container (jar). Sit this jar on the piece of cardboard and put a bigger jar over it, upside down, making sure the mouth of the jar is not bigger than the cardboard. This is essentially a homemade bell jar. Put this entire setup in the freezer for a few hours. 2 or 3 minimum and 24 won't hurt anything. When you remove from the freezer, dry any moisture that has collected on the outside of the small jar and put the jar into a dessicator. A dessicator is easily made using as jar that you can get your hand into, adding oven dried epsom salt, table salt, and damp rid up to about 1/4th full. Cover this with a few folded up paper towels and you're good to go. The jars with the rubber gasket and glass lid that clamps down works great for this and are easy to find at the arab owned dollar stores (not those chain stores). A day or two in the dessicator and the iodine will be very dry. The exposure to air is minimal and there is little, if any, noticable loss. If you sublime this iodine, it will be as pure as the iodine used by even the pickiest of garage chemists. There are many more things you can do to increase iodine yields, but many don't like reading outrageously long threads and much gets missed anyway. Hope this helps a little.
