birch idea
alrighty .. now i was thinkin for you guys doin the birch method and if you have some cash (or not - you could find/buy an old one) buy a small door freezer ...
lay the freezer with door facing up and drill a hole into it .. turn the freezer on and cover the hole .. when ur ready to do your birch open the door up but the vessel in and line up the vessel with the hole in the door and then close the door ..
wouldnt this preserve the dry ice MUCH longer .. giving you more time to stir and gin around?
if the dry ice isnt melting as fast as u want turn up the temp of the freezer or turn it off all together and continue mixing ...
just a thought .. neva done the birch method so no flames thanks .. just curious to see what you guys might think of it.

Re: birch idea
dry ice doesnt melt as fast as one might think. swim just pours some in a large bowl lined with a towel. vessel is removed when properly mixed and rxn has turned everything dark blue-grey. it doesnt seem to melt very much.
swim was told that dry ice melted in freezer but he's not sure of this.
if not, good idea for large scale birch

Re: birch idea
hmm
the reason for the dry ice it to keep the ammonia from evaporating
the reason for the ammonia is to dissolve the sodium metal/lithium,,
what most do is add another 100 ml of ammonia to the mix,,this 100mls evaporating keeps everything cold,,,
though you do score good marks for originality and an idea that would be needed if you were in some stinking hot full of boungs fly heaven called WA
