Whats in a Lab?
Hey, I was wondering what you other Totse.com chemists use in your laboratories. With christmas coming up it occured to me that I'd like a chemistry set, yet all of them are for kids.
What do I need in my laboratory set in order to do things like grind stump remove pellets into fine powder or keep something at a constant temperature for a reaction... or contain N2O gas?
Any ideas on laboratory gear needed and where to find it?

PS. I saw that the company AirGas sells purified N2O. Any idea if they will sell that to just anyone and if they measure the litres of chemical they sell as the chemical in liquid form or gas form (Eg. 6L N2O (g) does not equal 6L N20 (l) -> which do they use?)

Re: Whats in a Lab?
For grinding stuff buy or make a ball mill. A gas supplier should sell you clean Nitrous, as it is not controlled. And liquid gasses are sold by the liter and compressed gasses are sold by the cubic foot of uncompressed gas.

Re: Whats in a Lab?
For your lab you will need beakers. Im getting some chem stuff for christmas aswell
I just sent away for a catalogue from a lab supply company and had a little browse. Im gettin about 20 Simex Beakers and about 5 Pyrex. A mortar and pestle is useful. You may also need a bunsen burner or a hotplate. Scales come in handy aswell.
Just look at what you intend on doing, and check what you need.

Are hotplates what are used to determine melting points? er... are they just plates you put hot things on?

Hotplates are metal boxes with electric heating elements. they provide the heat. like an electric stove to go.

Re: Whats in a Lab?
So, where are any websites or catalogues you can order stuff from?
Hotplates are better for the chemistry commonly talked about on totse, right?

Most hotplates allow you to set specific tempatures.

Re: Whats in a Lab?
I found the best site was:
Wardsci.com
Where the field & lab section has prettymuch everything you need minus the chemicals.
However, Unitednuclear.com has quite a few chemicals - mainly for making fireworks.
Anyone have any idea where to go to find Acids and Bases? Other compounds?
