Default White stuff in condenser?

Swim had a dream about a build-up of white stuff in the condenser that goes about an inch and a half up the coil at the flask side of 400mm graham. This was not present at the 10th hour but present at 13th. Any Ideas what this might be in swims dream? 250rb/13-8.5-16-6.5/e.rp.i2.dh2o

are they crystals? if so its caused by to dry of a rxn. SWIM gets em whem he uses only 0.5 ml DH2O per G of E. 0.7 ml cures it. they are HI crystals.

Yeah I'd like to see those "HI" crystals. HI "freezes" at -50.8C, and it's boiling point isn't much higher, which makes HI nothing more than a gas at normal rxn temps. Just add a little H2O down the condensor and continue reflux. Could be anything, although SWIMS guess is it's neither PI3 or P2I4 solidifying, or it's H3PO4 solidifying.1

SWIM had those crystals once or twice and looked thru the hive on it and seen posts where it was caused by to dry of a rxn. SWIM upped the DH2O to 0.7 never had em again untill tryed 0.5 ml so no matter what the crystals are its caused by to dry of a rxn. what they are is actually irrelevant. knowing what causes it is more important.

Yes I agreed with you Wicked, on it being to dry of an rxn. However someone said they were "HI crystals", I was simply correcting this misinformation. Do not take offense.

SWIM not taking offense MC but now it seems its buggin hell out of him what those crystals actually are lol, enlighten him please. when SWIM has had them they readily dissolve when tapped back into the flask. what tripped SWIM out was they were perfectly square crystals and all uniform in shape and pretty much in size. SWIM just re-read your post MC and seen where you said what you thought it was. my apologies. SWIM slinks back to his corner lol.

Ooops, I meant "either", not "neither".

Anyways, another speculation is maybe when the rxn is to dry it begins to overheat, causing pseudo/iodoeph./meth to begin to boil and vapourize, crystallizing in the cold condensor. The goods are now in their HI salt form, so crystal shape will look different. Anybody know the shape and appearance of the HI salts of pseudo/iodoeph./meth offhand?

this will clear it up....throw some distilled water down the condenser.....lol

lol SoConfused you live up to your name. the question and the debate is not how to clear it up but what is it? SWIM knows what causes it and how to clear it up but is curious as to exactley what it is. pay attention and maybe you will be LessConfused.

w_r...now who is confused here....don't take your confusion out on me. for the record, some people don't care why.. they just want to save their product as quick as possible. A clogged condenser can make for a very dangerous environment...clogging that starts sometimes early in the reflux considering amt and cleanliness of chems, temp of reflux. when you finally figure out the cause and stop speculating here, please do let us know. i believe madchemist may have pointed you in the right direction.

did i mention to use "warm" distilled water.

oh yeah...have i told you that not only am i so_confused but i am also mindless.

well in the spirit of a friendly debate i will say this, for the most part you are right, some people dont care why however i will copy and paste his exact question:

Swim had a dream about a build-up of white stuff in the condenser that goes about an inch and a half up the coil at the flask side of 400mm graham. This was not present at the 10th hour but present at 13th. Any Ideas what this might be in swims dream? 250rb/13-8.5-16-6.5/e.rp.i2.dh2o

note the, "any ideas what this might be"

SWIM however is more than willing to entertain the idea that he maybe confused lol and like he said before he already figured out the cause and SWIM knows this to be fact as he has experimented with it. its caused by to dry of a rxn. that has been established and agreed on. but the originol question remains, exactley what is it, what is its chemical makeup. now unless SWIM is reading this all wrong and is truly confused he has the thread read and answered properly to this point. let SWIM know what you think.

Now ya got me interested in what it may be. I too like the idea that it may be pseudo/iodoeph./meth that began to vapourize, and then crystallized in the cold condensor. Any others??
