Default Wicked...Alaska Question

Hello Wicked,

I know this is not related to the forum, and apologize to anyone who consider this a waste of time.

But...I was wondering what its like having 3 months of darkness? That's gotta' be crazy. Or even crazier...3 months of light? Thanks Wicked, for your time.

Also...Swiss had a friend that lived in Alaska for a while, she said when it was extremely cold, you could take a cup of coffee and, holding the cup in your hand and throwing the coffee into the air, the coffee would vaporize or something and come down as specks on the snow.

Does that sound right to you? This broad was certainly not above a tall-tale or 4!

Alaska is certainley a unique place to live Str8. to get the total around the clock darkness you have to be above the arctic circle and then there is a 30 day period where the sun never comes up. as you come south the days get progressivley longer. where SWIM lives (400 miles south of the arctic circle) the shortset day is about 4 hours daylight, 20 hours darkness, in the summer those hours are reversed with 20 hrs daylight 4 hrs darkness altho it dont actually get pitch black dark. it fucks with some people hardcore causing depression and shit but not SWIM. SWIM dont give a fuck of its light or dark lol. the 1st summer SWIM was here it fucked with him a lil bit but only because he would come out of the titty bar at 2 am and it would be like 2 in the afternoon. thats a strange experience being drunk on tequila at 2 am and have to wear sunglasses. SWIM was like....damn is it am or pm how long was SWIM in that damn bar anyways lol. in the winter my buddys kids get on the bus for school in pitch black and get off the bus in the afternoon in pitch black. that has to be kinda wierd SWIM thinks. and yes when its extremley cold the coffee thing is true. you can take a piss at those temps and as soon at it hits the ice it freezes solid. the coldest SWIM has seen is 76 below zero F with no wind chill. SWIM has seen 130 below zero with wind chill. SWIM regulary works outside in temps down to 30 to 40 below zero. work 20 min or so then jump in truck or man hut for 30 min then back outside work 30 min etc. thats when SWIM makes the big bucks not many can do it and the few that can get fuckin paid lol. SWIM is 6 foot 2 and currently weighs about 260 with wild hair past shoulders full beard and mustache so face dont freeze off. SWIM looks like a wild caveman people tell him lol SWIM thinks of it as insulation not hair. it is 22 below zero as we speak at 230 am but the fuckin wind quit blowin at least. SWIM likes the ruggedness of the last frontier and fits in perfect. SWIM and alaska is like peas n carrots lol SWIM was born and raised in east texas as was his daddy and his daddy before him. quite the difference i assure you. SWIM lives deep in the woods 60 miles to supermarket 75 miles to hospital 20 miles to post office. SWIM`s closest neighbor is 3 miles away. SWIM dont like town and town dont like SWIM. well SWIM is off to his nest for some sleep yake care str8. btw SWIM was wondering what you used to mate the lava lamp glass/flask to the rubber tubing. do you use a stopper and nipple setup or do you use large ID tubing and slip it over the small neck of the lava lamp glass clamping it in place. SWIM has some 5/8 ID tubing that fits perfect over the neck of the glass vessel and clamps securly around the neck just below the lip at the tip of the vessel and thinks that will work killer. just wanted to ask that and also it makes this thread officialy a lab tips topic. so anyone that whines about this not being forum related can fuck off unless its tryp or AM. later shooter, be safe

I think he answers your question quite clearly in his post...wait-a-minute, you're fucking this dingo, I'm just holdin' the tale, sorry boss! Nah, I know what yer saying Kirb, like you had the oil-rig-gig, and got to experience different places.

Anyway,

Thanks a lot for the insight on Alaska Wicked, its kind of fascinating to Swiss, learning, ya' know?

Swiss bailed hay all day in the East Texas (Quitman) Summer heat, doesn't sound like much, but I bet you did a little ass-bustin' hay-bailin' while you were there, and can agree- with 104 degrees and no breeze, most ain't cut out for that iether! Loading mobil-home blocks and tottin' 'em all day ain't for the "average bear" iether!

(Before I keep this lab-friendly!)

Did you ever go 'coon huntin' when you lived in E. Tx. with "real" 'coon-dogs? I'm sure you did...Thst's some of the best times Swiss has ever had...Get the .22's the lights and gear, and of course those bad-ass highly trained trackers, and when it gets good and dark...set out into the woods. (hey, it ain't Alaska, but East Texas' piney forrests ain't no "Central Park") We were right at Big Sandy Creek...Alligators, bobcats, panthers, snakes to name a few characters. Anyway, the beauty of coon hunting and what makes it an adventure is this: Wherever the dogs go- you go...swamps, creeks, gullys, overgrowths, you follow. They have speacial barks that let you know when they're lookin' when they're trailin' and when they've got one treed, and there's lots of time through the night, while your waiting for them to tree one, you and your buddies just set out there deep in the woods, and shoot the shit and enjoy mother-nature...ughh...anyway...Swiss' tubing fits snugly "inside" the neck of the lamp, stopping before the sides begin to slope out. He puts it inside because it fits "much" more securely this way and facilitates proper reflux of condensation (pressure and gravity are more "natural".

I spent my summers in East Texas with my cousins...(Thier Grandpa called me "City Slicker") But I'm from "Big D" so, although I had my own guns, I didn't have a head-lamp that cost as much as a good car...and I didn't have my own 'coon-dick-tooth-pick...Don't ask. Maybe Wicked can tell you.

Hahaha. Holy shit STR8. I don't post much here anymore but had to on this one. Never thought I'd see the town of Quitman with a population of about 2 posted on here. I stay in Tyler but luckily moving to a town a few miles south of Dallas in a couple months. You should holler at me next time you go huntin down here. Me and a couple friends just started going bow hunting on some friends land near Dogwood City. Good fun but still not as fun as hunting wild pigs around my home in the 808 state.

SWIM was raised in a little shithole place between buffalo and palestine called flo 1 gas station/store and 1 church thats it. yes SWIM has ran behind the dogs many times. SWIM grew up on a cattle ranch/farm and worked his whole life since he was kid. SWIM grew to hate it and just couldnt see himself doin the same old shit in the same old place forty or 50 years till he was dead. SWIM was introduced to meth in 1979 and that was the beginning of the end of life in texas for him. funny what things go on deep in the woods. hell it was easier and closer to get a bag of dope than a pack of smokes or gallon of milk lol. shooter how do you secure the tube in the flask? SWIM has the lava glass clean and ready to rock and some items to secure it to tubing just was wanting some more ideas 1st.

Switrd just had a flashback of when lived in a small rathole of a town called "Leaky" also in Texas. Population 347...between Junction, and Uvalde. Never did much coon hunting, but father inlaw was ranch manager of a 3500 acre, private exotic game ranch. Going there was like an episode from national geographic. Switrd remembers all too well...walking the fenceline, patching hog holes in it. He'd be kneeling down next to this 15ft fence patching a hog hole that a small child could walk through....then the dog would go missing, a minute later freaking dog would come back through the thick cedar with 3 or 4 gigantic boars (pissed off) chasing close behind. Holy shit if Switrd didn't surpass all the record high jumps then climbed as high as he could....hahahahah that fucking dog did this to him several times. Finally stopped taking that bastard!!

And oh yeah...Switrd was going to go find him one of these lava lamp contraptions. How much should he spend? You know, to ensure he doesn't get stuck with a cheapy....doesn't wanna get ripped either.

Wicked,

I included my "tubing technique" in that post about 'coon huntin'...I slipped it in there...easy to miss.

I use clear (pvc) "rubber" tubing (about 1') that fits snugly "inside" (tubing-male, lamp-female) the lamp, and secure it with electrical tape. Its a lot more secure and practical this way.

However, this type of tubing is flexible...I'm thinking of something rigid, str8 up and down, for maximum reflux and condensation recirculation.

Wicked,

Reading this just gave Swif a case of the home-sick blues . After nearly 18 years he left AK back in '86, got lost and then sidetracked and now can't cut loose from Spudland for at least another 6yrs. But when the time comes I'm headed back up there - no place I've been compares and there's just not enough words to describe it, that's for sure!

I spent a good deal of that time in the Big Apple, aka Anchorage. Just wondered if you ever been to Chilkoot Charlies or PJ's on Spenard Rd.? Grew up in those bars back in the mid-70's - those were wilder, rougher days but that's all changed now.

Last visit was about 3 yrs. ago (still got family spread around AK) and I gotta agree with you that city life, even in AK just don't appeal to me.

I'd probably head to Seward, Valdez or Homer when I get the chance to get back up. Ah does like my fishin, heh heh, and you just can't beat the experience when you pull your boat into one of those isolated coves, glaciers for a backdrop, brownies loping down the mountain side, eagles soaring overhead, a sixpack in the cooler and a fish on, and all at 2 in the morning, man that's living!!!

Oh yeah, did that 5/8 ID tubing thing work out on yourlava lamp setup ;?D

almost forgot, yeah fearno i been to chillkoots and pj`s many times. i think pj`s is gone now . not sure. i go to the great alaskan bush company for entertainment when i am so inclined. finest goddamn full nudity strip bar that has ever been placed on this planet. i go to the deaddawg saloon in wasilla alot as well. another fine establishment with naked wenchs and whiskey till 4am. WHISKEY FOR ME AND BEER FOR THE WHORES!!!! heralds my arrival. i drink and/or fight till 4 am then i call a towtruck and tell em im broke down at the deaddawg (cant be drunk drivin) and need my truck towed home. they load it up on the slideback and i get in my truck and crank up some eminem or kid rock and enjoy my 50 mile trip home. i used to take a taxi but that cost 25 dollars more than a towtruck and plus i had to take my fuzzybrain back the next day to retrieve my truck not to mention you cant smoke cigs in a taxi. well doing it the way i do now i save 25 bucks, dont have to go back the next day, smoke like a fuckin chief and dont get no hassles for driving drunk. my friends all think im quite the character lol.

Wicked,

Yah, sounds like you're a born Alaskan friend - and I hear you about that solitude! I do miss it sometimes more than anything else. But I've been contaminated by living in the civilized world for too long and I'm stuck for yet a while longer. But my heart knows that it's there waiting for me when the times right, and when I get back up there I won't be leaving again. Well cept for the occasional trip back down to the jungles of Costa Rica as I have to obey the Prophet Jimmy from time to time and soak up the tropical rays while basting myself with tequila and rum drinks. But that's another life, another chapter, and so it goes....

it is not cause it is cold, directly that is. see the air there is really dry cause low temnperatures cause water vapor to not exist in the air, so the water in the coffee is actually dissolveed in the air. at least this is what my step dad told me a while back.

(not sure if this was already said, too much to read through with my limited free time)

you hit it right on the head man. the air is so cold that the humidity is virtually non existant. the combination of dry and cold causes the hot coffee to vaporize almost instantly. kinda like freeze dried.

what an enjoyable read, and wonderful break.Being a girl and growing to women in this world there is a under lying fear given to you.Oh no you cant travel alone, someone has to ride with you.You cant walk home alone, someone has to go with you ....and on and on..the fears of the sick ones begin to trap women in there own lives.I, as may people (men included) felt that underlying fear of being alone.Recently my father past away and i traveled 2000 miles to make arrangments and pack his belongings for the most part on my own and I sat in the woods on his 80 acres alone ...watched the sun set and rize and felt the true glory of having no one around...how your thoughts can become so sound and deap with noone around to disturb them.It was a wonderful moment in my life that has changed my uttermost being.I can and do everything I want in life and am free to do so, you answer to no one when your not afraid to be alone. That was a lesson I consider my fater to have givin me in his passing. The most wonderful gift.I love being far out now.I dont miss "town" I dont have cable...dont care shut it off...I said this is a total downer...bye bye tv, bye bye neighbors...I rarely plug my phone in. When I wanna deal with the world I go out there but hey when I dont its too far for anyone to want to drive and I like it that way.I guess thats why these types of passings are so wonderful..Its so nice shut it off when im done and pick it up when I want. This works the same for all sides and isnt it wonderful that way.Peace to you! I would love to go fishing in alaska a friend of mine is Athabaskin(sp) and he used to help his uncle run the dogs, and fish all summer I have heard amazing tales of Alaska. And if I went now I could enjoy camping and hiking all alone.
