here's my ultra-ghetto setup for distilling ether from starting fluid(already got rid of the water-soluble stuff):
1) take a glass snapple bottle and wrap a piece of a plastic bag over the open mouth(pour in ether + heptane solution first). Hold it there with a small hair scrunchie around the neck
2) take an empty plastic bottle and do the same
3) push one end of a long piece of flexible plastic tubing(8 ft) and push it through the plastic on the snapple bottle. Put lots of waterproof tape where the plastic meets the tube.
4) do the same with the other end of the tube and the other bottle.
5) place the glass bottle in a small plastic tub that is half full of hot bath water and elevate it about 7 feet off the ground(i used a shelf)
6) place the plastic collection bottle in a small tub that is half full of cold water and/or ice
7) wait a really long time
the condenser(tubing) is simply air-cooled.
i've let this run while i take an hour-long bath(i live with parents) a couple of times and ended up with a couple of milliliters each time.
any tips for improvment(household items only:-)
can you top it?
