...that happened to Swird'd's rxn.

He said -and swird'd has no reason to lie- When he used his:

a)"extensively cleaned" and then diced to a fine powder-(RP)

b) Iodine crystals -strained and then rinsed with cold water, then left to dry.

c) Psuedo - over-zealously washed as well. Nice transluscent pin-wheels.

d) 2 caps of dh2o

Now measurments unfortunitely are some what sketchy- he believes it went something like this:

(in order)

RP(5gm)+ Idne(6.5gms)+ Psuedo (6gms)

The ratios he said, are accurate.



NOW for the important part of this story.



HEAT SOURCE: a table lamp-light that used a 150 watt Halogen light that he had just bought a the store. The lamp had glass cover about an inch and a half away from the halogen bulb.



(Swid'd was in need of something flat that gave off some heat and noticed that lamp in Swid'ds room, so Swid'd turned over and tested it with therometer and saw that it gave off about 150F-160F of heat, so that is how Swid'd came about using the lamp.)

The light was off in swid'ds room and

his room was rather dark, like dusk. So he added the RP,Iod,Psuedo,dh20 then strapped a balloon on his vessel, put it on the turned over lamp, and then turned the light. The light was brighter than shit, to say the least.

So immediatley after that, he gets up to take a piss and is gone for approximately two or three minutes tops, only to come back to honey with the RP dropped to the bottom!

In case you missed that, he finished the rxn in 2-3 minutes.....

Clear pale yellow liquid with the RP dropped like a bad habit!

So after Swid'd shit his pants he came to the conclusion that the sudden bright light had to have something to do with it.

That's for someone else to explain though, for he wouldn't know how to explain only what it is he did.

One thing he knows is, he ain't changing a thing.

Anyways Swid'd saw the post on the "Cold RXN Method" and is convinced that the light triggered the rxn. 'cause I mean he said it went from smokey reaction(before intro-to the light), then immediately to the bubble'n red chilli, and about a minute after that it was clear/yellow with the rp on the bottom, and the balloon went from being expanded(pushed) to being sucked backed in (pulled) in sequence w/ the seen events inside the flask. All which occurred in under 4 minutes.

Yellow does not mean done, CLEAR means done.

Whether you were going for a long reflux or dry p/p, I garuntee that rxn is no where near finished and the product is shit. There's no way in hell an HI reduction is gonna happen that fast. Period.

Yes it's very true that light sets of the reaction. It has been well documented at the hive. However, just becuase in four minutes all the iodine color is gone does not mean it is done (or the pseudo even began to convert) at all. All it means was that the I2 was reacted and turned into HI. Thats it. The reaction with HI and pfed to form iodo-pfed and water is fairly quick, but not that quick. And the dissociation of HI into nascent forms of both hydrogen and iodine, followed by the nascent I reacting with iodo-pfed producing I2, and the nascent H saturating the carbon forming meth takes way longer than simple conversion to the iodo-intermediate.

I can garuntee the product from a four minute rxn with 6g's of pfed is going to be extremely dissapointing and total crapola. If you think that the product is good, then you need to re-think your reductions cuase your producing nothing but half converted crap my friend (with four minutes more like 1/10th converted crap).

SWIM doesn't mean to insult you at all. SWIM just can't even count the amount of times SWIM thought he was producing very good high quality product, only to get better at the HI reduction and become surprised time and time again at how much better it was than what SWIM thought was already the best. SWIM has mastered the dry p/p to the point where the product is very fucking excellent and very clean and pure which is still a level of quality I would except even now (and I have very high standards). But when SWIM did his first long 12 hour reflux instead of the dry p/p, the product just surprised me all over again, and quality was something god-like.

You'll see with time as you experiment and learn.

Swird'ds looking for something to recrystalize it with and all he has is denatured alcohol, so he was wondering if that would be compatible for making crystals?
