The "TRUE" Dual-solvent Recrystallization Method
Recrystallization is about the only process I don't have a "firm" grasp on. I've tried a few "styles", tweaking the variables here and there, and I really haven't had much trouble "succesfully" recrystallizing. I know...SEARCH...look at Gotta's thread...etc. Well, I have, and Gotta's methods vary from thread to thread, and everybody seems to have thier own ideal as to how to do it correctly...
You would think that such an intergral part of "our craft" would be a little more universal or, at least, be more well defined than it is.
Anybody out there qualified to form a cullmination of the terribly inconsistent, "popular versions" of something we all should master if we truly want to excel in this field?
Like I said, I can recrystallize, no problem- but maybe someone can offer this information so I can do it with AUTHORITY!
On behalf of everybody that's said "Which fuckin' one of these is the right way?!.....Thank You in advance!

Re: The "TRUE" Dual-solvent Recrystallization Method
hi mate
i see this is a subject you feel strongly over
these words will shit you but a couple of years will see you accept there truth..
pretty much any of the major online recrystalization recipes will work mate..
after yourve done about 20 of the buggers you begin to see things you didnt before..
you begin to change times and amounts and refine it to your perception of perfection..
and thats the best method for you str8..
the one you devise

Re: The "TRUE" Dual-solvent Recrystallization Method
Of course...but for everyones sake, lets narrow down the parameters a little! We all know the basics: M in sol.A-very sol. M in sol.B-not so sol, slower M cools- bigger crystals etc. etc.
Actually I don't feel "stongly", My current abillities are acceptable, just trying to get a LITTLE closer to the lowest common denominator for SCIENCES sake if nothing else. I'm rambling...I don't even care that much about it really...I need to shut up...Fuck you! lol er' sumpin'!

Got to agree for a newbie a bit more of a s.o.p. would be helpful, but thoroughly understand its like any other recipre for a stew, everyones is different. Its all in the seasonings!!!

Re: The "TRUE" Dual-solvent Recrystallization Method
What is your goal toward recrystallizing? Is it for extra purification? Or is it strictly for looks (bigger shardlike crystals)? If it is strictly for looks, the only way your gonna get big shards is by dissolving all of your product into water, and setting it on a shelf somewhere to forget about for a week or two.
Key to big shards is through slow evaporation in an undisturbed environment (i.e. somewhere where it's not gonna get bumped or vibrated). No dual solvent or anything like that is gonna do it like a slow H2O evaporation over several hours/days (as long as it takes). Patience is a virtue.

This is a copy and paste moment!! Switrd's had more success on accident, than on purpose with this. Twice he's set out a couple of evaporation dishes in different locations in his home, and forgot about one he sets in the highest cupboard. Both times he's gone back for them, and found that they had the better lookin shards. Seems like when he tries for the big ones...he's always dissapointed. The one that sits in the cupboard and forgets about for 2 or 3 days, comes out the best!!

Re: The "TRUE" Dual-solvent Recrystallization Method
Would it be recommended to do a dual-solvent then do a final re-crystalisation in water over a week?
I just figured why not combine the best of both worlds.

So take some out and leave the rest to evaporate. SWIM has fucked up many batches do to impatience and fiending for a buzz. You'll always get a better reward if you wait, beleive me on that.
Also, seriously, he will not get very big shards using typical dual solvent recrystallizations. Only slow evaporation. The less volatile the solvent, the better. And NO VIBRATION is a must. This will break up the crystals as they grow, thus giving smaller shards.
