AP sensitivity
Ahoy hoy!
My friend has just made a quite a large amount of AP (well at least to my standards anyway), like 450 grams or so.... anyway, he packed the damp AP into a tin(or iron, i dunno, probably tin) container, against my warnings though, because now that it's packed it'll take forever to dry...but that's not the problem anymore. The problem is that the tin rusted. I've read that AP reacts with metals, and now all his AP has a yellowish tint to it. I told him that I think its pretty dangerous at this point(not that it isnt dangerous already), but I would like to know if this is true. Does AP get very sensitized with metals? And is the AP at this point, with its yellowish tinge, dangerously sensitive?

Re: AP sensitivity
Questions regarding explosives should be posted in the Backyard Ballistics Forum.
I don't think AP reacts with metal, you are probably thinking about HMTD. You should be more afraid of the fact that you have 450 grams of a relatively unstable explosive! ~NP

Re: AP sensitivity
Your friend is on the verge of joining the darwin awards!!!
That much AP is scary, are you sure it is a pound the stuff is bulky a pound would fill a couple of measuring cups?
Anyways that is a scary ammount and coming from me that MEANS something! I've detonated 15-20 gram charges of dry, neutralized AP and it would have taken my entire arm if not my life if I was holding it. That much AP WILL make it hard for the police to identify the remains of your friend.
The yellow color means that your friend didn't neutralize it (it should be stark white), I have yet to do the tests I planned on to see what kind of reduction in sensitivity this would cause. But it is safe to say that it is more sensitive than it would normally be. In addition as it gets older it gets more sensitive, any older than three days of open air drying and it is borderline insanity just to carry it. You might have some safety in that it won't dry in the can, but it has been known(rumored) to sublime and make sensitive crystals in containers that detonate when opened so you are looking at a waste of chemicals or the waste of a life.
My advice honestly would be to call the bomb squad, suck up the punishment, learn from the blatant stupidity. (I hope you are a minor) This is the only way you are going to walk away from this with a guarantee you will live.
I do not advise it but if you are willing to risk your lives, you need to carefully carry it to a remote area and put it in a large tub of water and hope it wets it really well inside, remove the lid or put holes in it somehow from far away (firearms?) and soak the sensitized AP well with water dilute it and dispose of the liquid. Assume at all times that it can go off by a feather touch.
If you go against my suggestions and stupidly try and dispose of it yourselves you may likely get away with it with no problems, you may even be utterly retarded and get the lid off and decide to make a device with the AP. This will be a bad thing because then you will think "hey this shit ain't as sensitive as they say it is" then you lose your respect for it and it is only a matter of time before you are short a limb, or a friend(you could die but then you won't care).
You really blew it this time.

Re: AP sensitivity
i'm gonna have to agree with tryptamine. WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO?!?!?!?
how in the hell do you make a pound of ap, then proceed to crazily sensitize it, and have no way of disposing of it? your asshattery, sir, is incredible.
on a lighter note, i had to dispose of about 20 grams once. dig a big ass hole in the ground, and CAREFULLY transport the ap to the hole. find a way to ignite it without removing the lid, possibly a cob and a fireball. if its still wet, you need a flame to ignite it. get a long ass fuse, or electrical ignition and prepare for one huge ass shock wave.
try not to kill yourself, and dont EVER do anything like that again. you're lucky you're not dead yet.

I'm not the one who's lucky, I didn't make it :P...the most i've ever made has been about 25 grams. and when i do i neutralise w/ a saturated solution of baking soda and water.

Re: AP sensitivity
whoever did it, they're in for a load of shit. besides, usually when someone mentions a friend in lab tips they're referring to themselves.(self-incrimination)

Re: AP sensitivity
I know you didn't make it but since you know about it and you told us about it, we may refer to it as being your baby.
So I am concerned, what has happened to your muffin tin of AP?

Re: AP sensitivity
Well there was no lid, he knew at least not to put a lid on it. He removed it from the tin and let it air-dry and then fooled around with it. The yellow stuff was more sensitive to heat/flame then the normal kind, just holding a match kinda close to it set it off. Comparatively, he had to touch his white AP with the flame to set it off. I dont know about detonation though, because what he used to set it off(i think it was a firecracker in a small pill bottle full of AP) would set off any standard trimmer, neutralised AP.

Re: AP sensitivity
You let that stuff dry a little longer and lighting it with a match won't make neat fireballs anymore it will detonate forcefully in an unconfined pile.
