will this ether purification work? thanks!
I read this on rhodium, I've searched here and at rhodium and this is the most ive found?? do i not no how to search???? anyway..
my questions, would be, if this would work.
how long to cook at 35dgs? extra safety procautions? specific names at canadian tire of most used brand?
I am without adoubt going to do this as safe as possible, and when all questions are answered so I can do this right/safetly.
thanks for the help!
directions i got off rhodium below.
For those who don't care to synthesize ether, there is a readily available source in the
automotive section of your local department store. Most people know it as starting fluid.
The main component is diethyl ether. The current leading K-mart brand contains heptane(bp
98°), dimethyl propyl methane (2-methyl pentane, bp 60°), and diethyl methyl methane
(3-methyl pentane, bp 63°) as added ingredients. The other ingredients all boil
significantly higher than ether so the ether can be removed by distillation. To collect the
ether for distillation, spray the contents of the can into a flask that is nestled in
crushed ice (in a well ventilated area or outside). Once can use one of the "straws" tha
comes with a can of WD-40 to spray the starting fluid contents well into the flask. Distill
the liquid collecting the portion boiling up to 35°C.

Your question indicates that you probably have not distilled anything before. Or if you have it wasn't volatile solvents.
Prehaps, you might want to reconsider attempting to distill ether. It is highly hazardous.
If not, the basic principle behind distillation. is that a solution with multiple components when heated will raise to the temp the component with the lowest BP, remain there until that fraction has boiled off. Then will proceed to increase in temp to the next corresponding BP in sequential order.
Which, is why an inline vapor thermometer is invaluable during distillations.
Vacuum distillation would probably be the best bet for ether, as it would essentially lower the BP to room temp or close there of, and reduce risk of explosive consequences.
Seriously, I cannot emphasize enough that attempting this without a proper or setup or functional knowledge could be very dangerous!

Re: will this ether purification work? thanks!
thanks for the repleys, i definitely understand that is extremely dangerous, I dont have my mind set on doing this today or anything!!
I used that search, 5 different times with different names, i must be doing something wrong...
I'll addmit i dont no eactly what a vaccum distilation is except is sounds safer because it removes exposive gases correct?
if i did the other way still, it can be safely done by a larger window with a couple good fans?
instead of asking how long to distill for, i should have asked what to look for when its "done" and approx times.
thanks

Re: will this ether purification work? thanks!
listen to the candy, the candy is wise. ether is highly explosive. if memory serves 16 ounces is the equivelant of a 1/4 stick of dynamite. if that go`s off in your face say goodbye face. even if you happen to not get injured or dead say goodbye house, apartment or whatever. make sure you have your shit together when you attempt this. if nothing else your neigbors will appreciate it.

Re: will this ether purification work? thanks!
Im glad everyone's making sure I realise I need to know what im doing before i ever did this, but can you comment on that light proceadure i posted?
I seriously have searched for "ether" "how to make ether" "how to purify ether" stuff like etc etc.. i must be doing something wrong?
if anyone wants to point me to a good website there welcome too! i was surprised to have not found too much at rhodium.
ultimately the clearest instructions with the most detail is what I'm after. But I understand at the same time it can be more than just instructions to do somethings, I need to understand it.

why not spray into ur flask (swim uses a jar) add dh20 bout 3 times amount and shake good , let sepperate then remove ether as dh20 will washout trash?
swim see's it like that n see's a great THC honey in the end , good enought to put cronies on the ground, lol

ok RNX you get your 1st scolding. you CANNOT aquire diethyl ether in that fashion. here is a post by tryptamine who moderates this forum. he knows more about chemistry than you or i will ever hope to know. he has prolly forgot more than you or i will ever know. here is the addy to the post you can read for yourself: http://www.totse.com/bbs/Forum26/HTML/002465.html
also here is his own words on the subject:

You absolutely cannot purify ether with water, there is no way in hell. At best you are just making it wet.
The procedure orange describes actually takes all of the ether out of the starting fluid and evaporates it into the air and what you are left with is oil and water contaminated hexane(which can be bought much cheaper in pure form.
Bottom line: You need a fractionating column and a really cold condenser to purify ether from starting fluid.

The length of time depends on how much you have to distill.

Re: will this ether purification work? thanks!
You are a long way away grasshopper.
And the danger in distilling ether is the explosive peroxides it makes that will blow your apparatus into shards and propel the said shards into your flesh.

Re: will this ether purification work? thanks!
Well just never distill ether to dryness, you will have the other components of the starting fluid to keep it from going this far. Other than that, learn how to distill shit, practice with water and read the other thread where I mentioned having a few spare bags of ice around just in case.

Re: will this ether purification work? thanks!
your saying I won't get it down to just ether??
can only post a used and tested method for getting ether?
fyi: I dont have plans on huffin it, seems a tad to dirty for me.

Re: will this ether purification work? thanks!
after you distill the low boiling ether off you will be left with the higher boiling hexane, and maybe some peroxides in the flask. So if you throw out what is left in the flask when the ether stops coming over you will get rid of the dangerous peroxides.

Re: will this ether purification work? thanks!
thanks for the reply,
does anyone know of any links to diagrams or anything that can be really useful? I continue to figure things out, but its in bits and pieces. I'd find it clearer if someone had a tried and true method, with precautions.. bascialy not half the steps
I know its like pulling teeth trying to get all the answers, so any helpful posts are good,
does, anyone use a certain brand?
