apartment style
how big of a problem would there be to do a iodine wash and say either a nano synth or lavalamp cook in a apartment?
i know its probally not recommended but you have to do what you have to do right?
this is going to be on somewhat of a small scale just for personal use.
if anyone has suggestions or other methods i should study up on please let me know.
(i know im already crazy for apartment cook) lol

Re: apartment style
It's not really the "cook" that is dangerous in an apartment. The actual RP/I synth is usually very well contained and SWIL would be suprised if even SWIFxxx's nose could smell it in his own apartment(let alone down the hall or next door!). The lavalamp method was created for exactly such reasons, it's fully contained, there is no high heat, and one can easily "set-it-and-forget-it" and return after the cook. Of course this method does take longer than many other approaches; however, the high level of safety and minimal babysitting, makes it a very viable option for the less-adventureous and the patient-minded.
The only problem that SWIL can see with an apartment cook is the cleaning of all the precursors. This tends to get rather "smelly" from solvents and such. The high flammability of these solvents also adds another element of danger. The e-gull was created for such reasons(besides to just clean pseudo!). No flammable solvents and the odor is minimal.
Do not heat solvents without adequate ventilation(SWIL refers to "adequate" as any place where there can be a breeze). Whatever SWIFxxx does, don't get the fire department called! What could be worse than burning all of your belongings(probably also your face) and then having a Fire Investigator put you on trial for intent to manufacture? Probably not a whole lot!

Re: apartment style
thanks lucky!
swix is planning on using a small fan around all cleanings but would like to know if there is any problem of using a electric stove for hot plate perhaps if swix put flasks on pan while heating to low boils to prevent possible bubble over to direct contact with heat rings?
swix only asks because he has looked into hot plates and some seem to be just miniture electric stoves.

Re: apartment style
A good hot plate is nothing like your kitchen stove: For one thing, it won't have an exposed coil element that might create a spark.

Re: apartment style
Have all necessary fire extinguishing media readily available and consider a practice "disaster drill." The potential for serious damage is minimal, but add the panic factor and the whole building could go up in flames.

Re: apartment style
So a good hotplate is preferrable over a kitchen stove? But can a hotplate get your shit hot enough like up to 105 c?

Re: apartment style
It's best to get a lab-quality hot plate. One of decent quality could get up to 500 degrees Celsius, or more.
Those made for the kitchen, that look like a single burner from an electric stove aren't as safe.

Re: apartment style
swim agrees with most on smells, swim dreams in a 2 bedroom apt, cleaning is smelly but a good fan in window faceing away from others works nice. swim works on his elec stove for cleaning, cookin goes on hotplate with oil bath (peanut oil). swim dreamed 6 so far with only one mishap so far,,, dumb swim leaves a lid on jar with acetone in it on light double boiler heat, only to find lid swelled to airtight, amazeing how ace wont boil under pressure, lol caught it in time n relaesed press slow(while watching it boil with interest) till lid popped with loudness, luckly no mess involved...
just watch ur things closely, move smells to window with small fan, and a big fan in window causeing a good draft works ok but allways sketchy chance.
cook has no smells really, well in da end theres a really nice smell of DONE... till pullin and gassin.
bee safe

Re: apartment style
fixxed, may swirl suggest a getto fume hood. very simple to make and very useful. one can exhaust outside or thru a ordor/smoke contol device before sending it outside.
Swim made own out of pvc board and sealed it on the outside seams, has exhaust fan & light on inside top, slide down plexi glass look thru. hell even got fancy and put electric plug-ins at back base. even mounted on it's own table.
total cost bout $90. got fancy and paid $14.95 for a roll around desk chair at wally's.
works great.
hope this helps, 46

Re: apartment style
There are completely Fire-near-flammable free methods out there, if you search for them(or just think about it). There is no need to boil solvents, the only really necessary heated evaporations are done with dH2O(and even these could be done without heat and a little patience). Extremely safe, and very pure product.
Remember soaks instead of boils. It takes a little more solvent usually, but that's just how it goes. Acid/Base extractions and hot plates/light bulb heat sources are wonderful. Patience, patience, patience.
