a simple question about solvents
samuel was reading a write up the other day about dual-solvent recrystallization and it recommended acetone and MeOH as the solvents. Samuel understands that "dry acetone" evaporates and leaves no residue, but Samuel was wondering about the MeOH and how it leaves a slight oily residue behind. Knowing that consumption of MeOH causes unrepairable optical nerve damage (a.k.a BLINDNESS) samuel was wondering if EtOH would be a more desirable solvent because of its quick drying time and the fact that BLINDNESS isn't mentioned with EtOH???

Re: a simple question about solvents
if you have methanol that leaves an oily film behind,,,then you have methanol racing fuel which has this oil as an additive,,,discard it,,,and either get some without the oil or acquire one of the alcohols,,preferably isopropyl

Re: a simple question about solvents
Kirby is correct..
Also, the amount of Methanol it takes to induce blindness is much greater than any trace amounts you might encounter.
As far as using EtOH, it is vary rare that you will find ACS grade EtOH without purchasing from lab supply. Any EtOH you aquire OTC will contain an amount of water.
