Vegetable Oil
Just wondering, does anybody know if vegetable oil could be used as a non-polar solvent?

Re: Vegetable Oil
snowblind,,id find it very interesting to read the theory on why you feel that vegetable oil, could be, a suitable non polar solvent

Re: Vegetable Oil
Hey...Swirh will take a stab at this... Maybe Snowblind is living in the Artic Circle--aka the polar cap region... Well he knows that from experience that no vegetables grow at the polar cap (hence non-polar) C'mon now WR... you can somewhat sympathize with that portion of this SWAG...
Hmmmm... far as the solvent part...Swirh is at a loss of words on that one...Dunno
But hell, at least a start ya know... Gotta laugh at the little things...Peace

Re: Vegetable Oil
Suitable non-polar solvents for extractions are:
Xylene, Toluene, DCM, Naptha, Petroleum Ether, Diethyl Ether
There are many more, but these are some that are readily available over the counter at hardware stores, auto parts, and camping supplies.

http://www.northviewlabs.com/services/MD-Biocomp-BiocompatibilityTestingNotes.htm
says that:
Vegetable oil is a non-polar lipophilic solvent, simulating the lipids in the body.
check out: http://www.umanitoba.ca/faculties/science/biological_sciences/lab2/biolab2_3.html
These are just a couple of the web sites that introduced this idea to me. There are many other sites that say vegetable oil is a non-polar solvent. I may be way off base here but I figured it might be a decent alternative to heating a bunch of other extremely flammable solvents.

Was wondering if frying some potatoes first would remove any bad taste in the oil? J/K Gotta laugh at the little things...

Thanks, I appreciate the help. May have been a dumb idea, but if ya don't know it never hurts to ask, right?

Re: Vegetable Oil
vegitable oil is a non polar solvent. it would work if the solute is wax... but i doubt that.
