Potassium Dischromate
SWIM posted a little while back about powdered iodine and he found out what he had was potassium dischromate. Now SWIM is not a chemist but does this stuff make iodine crystals or am I just wasting my time with this stuff. SWIM is throwing a fit to know. Any thoughts.

Re: Potassium Dischromate
is it dischromate or dichromate?
potassium dischromate is used to treat zinc salts to give zinc chromate.
Potassium dichromate is used in the manufacture of the following products:
catalyst for the production of chromium metal
photographic engraving and lithographic chemicals
pyrotechnics and safety matches
analytical standard
they are bright orange crystals
neither have any iodine in them

Re: Potassium Dischromate
SWIM is sure he has potassium dichromate. They are bright orange crystals. SWIM stubbled across this note posted on a tree in the woods and it reads,"Dissolve, by careful heating, 20g of potassium dichromate (CARE! - HIGHLY OXIDISING/RISK OF FIRE!) in a mixture of 25 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid (CARE! HIGHLY ACIDIC AND CORROSIVE!) added to 15 ml of water. Cover the beaker with cling-film and allow to stand - the potassium chlorochromate product will crystallise within 1 hour. If no crystals form, scratch the glass with a spatula and/or cool the solution in ice. Filter off the crystals through sintered glass using a Buchner flask, dry by drawing air through them and finally on filter paper."
Sounds a lot like making crystals from tincture minus peroxide but anyway do you guys think that it will produce iodine crystals if I follow what the note says?

Re: Potassium Dischromate
I think you have to at least have some type of iodide to get iodine. Since iodine is an element, I don't think you can make it out of other substances that don't contain some form of I-something.
